Trailer Released for New Movie by ‘Your Name’ Episode Director

Exciting news for anime enthusiasts! The latest trailer for Hanaroku: A New Dawn (originally titled Hanarokusho ga Akeru Nichi ni) has just been released. Produced by Studio Outrigger, it’s important to distinguish this studio from Studio Trigger, renowned for titles such as Gurren Lagann, Delicious in Dungeon, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Studio Outrigger describes itself on its official website as an “IP producer & creator management”company.

This marks a significant milestone for Outrigger, as it follows their previous venture, Egumi Legacy, a 12-episode series that aired in 2024, with each episode lasting about 10 minutes. With Hanaroku, the studio takes a bold step forward in their production endeavors, as this is the first project where they are credited as producers rather than just animators.

The newly released trailer has confirmed that the movie is set to premiere across Japan this year. The direction of the film is helmed by Yoshitoshi Shinomiya. For a glimpse of this highly anticipated film, check out the trailer here:

As per reports on MyAnimeList, the film had its initial airing at the Annecy Animation Showcase held at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024.

Main Staff and Plot of A New Dawn

Taking the helm as director, Yoshitoshi Shinomiya has notable credentials, including collaborations with celebrated filmmaker Makoto Shinkai. Shinomiya played a vital role as an episode director and key animator for the acclaimed film Your Name. His artistry extended to projects such as The Garden of Words and Children Who Chase Lost Voices, where he contributed as a background artist. His portfolio also includes work on popular anime like Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works and The Garden of Sinners: Future Gospel.

Though this serves as Shinomiya’s feature film directorial debut, he has previously directed a music video for Chiaki Maruyama’s “Boukentai: Mori no Yuusha” and commercials for the NHK x Advertising Council Japan campaign featuring Mottanai specials. Notably, he is also working on a personal feature project titled Suisoi no Tora (translated as Fudge Factor).

In addition to his directorial role, Shinomiya takes on the responsibility of head writer, marking a new chapter in his career within commercial anime.

Among the talented team contributing to Hanaroku, the main artist Akiko Majima has previously served as Art Director for Your Name. Other key roles include character design by Utsushita (known for Heavenly Delusion) and contributions from Shuta Hasumuna.

Collaborating alongside Studio Outrigger are several esteemed production companies including Miyu Production and Asmik Ace, the latter also taking on distribution responsibilities.

The film spins a poignant narrative centered around Keitaro, a young man crafting fireworks in the shadow of his father’s mysterious disappearance. Concurrently, the Obinata Fireworks Shop faces the looming threat of confiscation. The storyline intertwines themes of disaster, ecological concerns, extreme weather conditions, and the trials of youth.
