Gintama unfolds within an alternate Edo-period Japan, where an alien invasion prompts significant political changes. In this unique narrative, the shogun capitulates, permitting the aliens’ entrance into the country, leading to a ban on swords—a clever parody of Japan’s diplomatic history following the Perry Expedition of 1852-1855.

At the heart of this story is Gintoki Sakata, a freelance oddjobber who teams up with Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura. This dynamic trio embarks on various adventures, frequently encountering criminal elements. While the series primarily takes an episodic format, an overarching plot develops throughout its progression.

Serialized from 2003 to 2019, Gintama was compiled into a total of 77 volumes. Its animated adaptation, initially produced by Studio Sunrise from 2006 to 2010, continued under Bandai Namco Pictures for subsequent story arcs, including the anticipated new spin-off.

For those interested in binge-watching Gintama, it is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
