The sequel to Tormented Souls continues the tradition of demanding puzzles that challenge even the most astute players. Right from the outset, gamers are drawn into a series of intricate challenges, including one notorious for its difficulty: the Cryptex puzzle.
In an early segment of the game, players must unlock the Cryptex, a mechanism retrieved from the grasp of a frozen nun found in a chilling freezer. Successfully opening this lock necessitates skillful manipulation of various dials to align them in the correct sequence.
If you’ve encountered obstacles while attempting to unveil the secrets of the Cryptex, don’t worry. This guide will walk you through the solution effectively—let’s dive into how you can crack the Cryptex puzzle in Tormented Souls 2.
Unlocking the Cryptex Puzzle in Tormented Souls 2

Once you pry the Cryptex from the nun, your next task involves entering the correct code by adjusting several discs. At first glance, this may seem straightforward, but the challenge lies in its complexities.
The code needed to unlock the Cryptex incorporates elements of chess, which might prove problematic for those less familiar with the game. However, the Convent area holds essential hints that can guide you to the solution.
Start by retrieving the chessboard located in the Calefactory room, situated to the north of the kitchen. You can find this chessboard prominently positioned on a desk at the center of the Calefactory.
Upon obtaining the chessboard, examine it and flip it upside down to unveil a set of unique symbols that will be crucial for solving the puzzle.

These symbols correspond to the various movement directions of chess pieces. Essentially, they provide a roadmap for the Cryptex solution without revealing it outright.
If you’re unfamiliar with chess piece movements, you can venture to the library area within the Convent. On the upper floor, you will find a booklet detailing the movements of all chess pieces. However, I personally recommend looking up the rules online to save time. Alternatively, you might prefer to proceed directly to the specific solution in the following section.
Solution to the Cryptex Puzzle

With the chessboard symbols in hand, you are prepared to unlock the Cryptex. Your goal is to align the symbols on the Cryptex with those on the back of the chessboard, which denote the direction of chess piece movements.
The order to unlock the Cryptex is as follows, from left to right: Knight, Rook, Bishop, Queen, King, Pawn, Knight. Refer to the accompanying image for clarity.
Once you have adjusted all the slots accordingly, the Cryptex will unlock, revealing a key inside. This Crown Key is essential, as it allows you to advance further into the game.

Utilizing the Crown Key

The Crown Key can be inserted into the locked door located on the northern side of the basement. This door is positioned close to the Crematorium, where you initially encounter the elderly man seeking your assistance in locating a book.
Consult the image below to pinpoint the door that necessitates the Crown Key, as indicated by a red arrow.

Once you utilize the Crown Key on this door, you will access the prison area, a compact yet crucial segment of the game that does not include a map. Fortunately, its small size makes navigation intuitive, eliminating the need for a detailed map.
