Although the sales of Xbox consoles and accessories have faltered recently—witnessing a notable 29% drop in the last fiscal quarter following a staggering 42% year-over-year decline for fiscal year 2024—Microsoft’s overall gaming operations have flourished. This growth is primarily driven by the performance of its game software and services, a trend expected to persist into the current year.

A report by analyst firm Ampere, highlighted by VGC, revealed that Microsoft generated $465 million in December 2024—almost $100 million more than its closest competitor, EA. The majority of this revenue can be traced back to the successful acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Notably, Activision’s flagship franchise, Call of Duty, surpassed 500 million copies sold in 2024, and under Microsoft’s ownership, profits from all new sales and downloadable content (DLC) are counted, regardless of the platform on which they occur. Interestingly, Ampere noted that 64% of expenditures on Microsoft titles in December originated from PlayStation users, indicating that Sony’s user base is indirectly boosting Microsoft’s sales.
