In recent years, roleplaying games (RPGs) have enjoyed a remarkable resurgence, and 2023 proved to be an exceptional year for the genre. As we look toward 2024, it becomes apparent that the upcoming year is set to etch its mark in RPG history, not just due to the remarkable volume of titles being released, but also because of their impressive quality. This abundance makes it increasingly challenging to select standout titles, as numerous RPGs released this year have introduced unique concepts, reimagined classics, and evolved established franchises.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (Score: 9.2)
The launch of Yakuza: Like a Dragon marked a transformative moment for its franchise, developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. This installment shifted away from many traditional elements, embracing the RPG genre with innovative features. In its sequel, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the refined turn-based combat and class systems are not only more engaging but further enhance the narrative journey of Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu. They successfully illustrate the transition of the torch between these beloved protagonists.
“Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth serves as the real bridge between the Yakuza and Like a Dragon series into one cohesive experience. It’s the perfect sendoff for Kiryu and a passing of the torch to the plucky Ichiban Kasuga. In a lot of ways, Infinite Wealth builds upon the past with callbacks that series fans could appreciate. It’s a Japanese RPG experience that could only best be described as Ryu ga Gotoku Studio’s Metal Gear Solid 4 moment.”— Kai Tatsumoto
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Score: 10)
Following the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy VII Remake, there was a surge of anticipation yet skepticism regarding its continuation. Delivering on these expectations, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth features vast open-world environments filled with rich activities, alongside an enhanced combat system that leans toward a more action-oriented approach. The game artfully reconstructs iconic sequences while introducing new twists, keeping fans eagerly speculating about the forthcoming finale of the trilogy.
“If there’s one word to describe Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, it would be ambitious. Tetsuya Nomura, Kazushige Nojima, and the rest of Creative Business Unit I at Square-Enix have turned what is merely the remainder of Final Fantasy VII’s Disc One upon leaving Midgar into a 100-hour-long epic.”— Kai Tatsumoto
Dragon’s Dogma 2 (Score: 8)
Dragon’s Dogma 2 sought to fulfill Hideaki Itsuno’s long-held vision of an immersive RPG with significant player agency. While it overlaps with the original and impresses with stunning visuals and an expansive open world, it ultimately feels like an improved version rather than a groundbreaking sequel. The enriched combat dynamics and intriguing mechanics, such as the Dragonsplague, offer exciting gameplay while leaving a desire for more depth.
“This review may read quite negatively, but it’s only because of the lofty expectations that surrounded Dragon’s Dogma 2. Still, make no mistake: Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a highly enjoyable fantasy action/adventure with RPG elements that will provide you with about 40 hours of pure fun.”— Alessio Palumbo
Metaphor: ReFantazio (Score: 9)
The anticipation surrounding Metaphor: ReFantazio began back in 2016 when it was revealed as Project Re: Fantasy. Despite doubts about its mechanics mirroring those from the Persona series, the final product has rejuvenated the formula, delivering a compelling narrative and extensive character customization. While the game stumbles in its closing act, it shows promise for an evolving franchise.
“Those who harbor an innate distaste for the social systems and time limits of modern Persona titles will find no solace here, but those willing to embrace what could be viewed as a new Persona experience will find one of the most stylish Japanese roleplaying games of 2024.”— Kai Tatsumoto
Dragon Age: The Veilguard (Score: 9)
After a series of challenging releases, BioWare has sought redemption with Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Stripping away the ill-suited open-world and live-service elements, the game presents a tightly woven narrative experience paired with a robust combat system and profound customization options. Fans of the Dragon Age series will find much to appreciate in this return to form.
“With Dragon Age: The Veilguard, BioWare has largely returned to its roots. Instead, Veilguard is a great mission-based RPG with a memorable story that will leave Dragon Age fans enthralled.”— Alessio Palumbo
