Exploring the Complexity of Horror in Anime

Creating a horror-themed anime can be more challenging than it appears. The intricacies of hand-drawn animation often fall short in delivering the same intensity and shock as traditional horror mediums. As a result, true horror anime are relatively uncommon, making the existing gems in the genre all the more treasured.

The most impactful horror anime evoke strong feelings of unease, delivering spine-chilling visuals that leverage the animation format to a degree that live-action cannot match. Fans of the genre are eagerly awaiting upcoming series, which promise to be among the most haunting and terrifying productions in anime history.

Winter 2025 Horror Anime Lineup

As of December 28, 2024, by Mark Sammut: With Winter 2025 fast approaching, it offers a limited selection for horror anime fans. Only one confirmed title for the new season stands out in this usually sparse genre. While classics such as Monster, Berserk, Attack on Titan, and Tokyo Ghoul feature elements of horror, they lack the depth in true horror moments required to be categorized as full-fledged horror anime.

Does Winter 2025 Have Any Horror Anime?

Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai 14

Reflective of 2024 as a rather uninspiring year for horror anime, the only notable release was the revival film, Mononoke the Movie: Phantom in the Rain, now available on Netflix. Aside from this film, the year failed to deliver consistent hits, leading to disappointment among genre enthusiasts.

Looking ahead, Winter 2025 currently boasts only one authentic horror entry, The Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai 14, which, at this stage, lacks the excitement it once did. Nonetheless, this ongoing series often rises to the occasion when no other titles deliver frightful experiences. Thankfully, titles like The Summer Hikaru Died, Jigoku Sensei Nube, and Nyaight of the Living Cat are also slated for 2025, suggesting that the genre may see better offerings in the future. Additionally, a new Mononoke movie is set for release in March 2025 in Japan.

For other anime this winter that might brush against horror, options are slim, with only occasional creepy elements found in titles like Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun and Ubel Blatt.
