As the selection of gender-bender anime continues to grow, fans often find themselves navigating a complex landscape. Thankfully, several standout series consistently rise to prominence, prompting the question: which gender-bender anime is truly the best?

Updated as of December 7, 2024, by Mark Sammut: Although gender-bender themes are not prevalent, they occasionally appear in comedic series, often for brief arcs. Even fleeting gender swaps can evoke laughter, especially when they defy viewer expectations. One series recently added to our must-watch list offers an engaging twist.

While body-swapping anime with opposite-gender characters will be included, isekai or reincarnation stories focusing on transformations into different genders will not be considered.

Will Fall 2024 Feature Any Gender-Bender Anime?

Gender-bender anime are exceedingly rare, so much so that the first three seasons of this year didn’t showcase any significant entries. While Senpai is an Otokonoko touches upon related themes, it doesn’t fully embrace the genre. However, Fall 2024 is an exception, introducing a highly anticipated gender-bender anime that also promises to be one of the year’s funniest offerings.

Before we delve into this exciting new title, How I Attended an All-Guy’s Mixer warrants mention due to its focus on cross-dressing elements, making it a potential hit for those intrigued by gender exploration.

Ranma ½

For nearly three decades, Ranma ½ has been heralded as the premiere gender-bender story. The recent adaptation by MAPPA serves as a fresh introduction for newcomers unaware of Rumiko Takahashi’s groundbreaking manga or its celebrated anime from the ’80s and ’90s. While the original remains irreplaceable, this new interpretation holds great promise for attracting a newer audience to Ranma and Akane’s enchanting love saga.

Receiving a modern retelling invites heightened scrutiny, particularly early on, where a lackluster execution could have resulted in significant backlash. Fortunately, the initial episodes of Ranma ½ have impressed, demonstrating that Takahashi’s humor remains timeless. The plot centers around Ranma, a martial artist who acquires the peculiar curse of transforming into a girl when splashed with cold water after falling into a mystical hot spring. Compounding his challenging situation is his father’s arrangement for him to marry Akane Tendou, a girl he initially clashes with.

MAPPA has dedicated significant resources to ensure this adaptation honors both the source material and the original series’ legacy. With outstanding animation quality, the character dynamics among Ranma, Akane, Ryouga, and Nabiki exhibit the charm that first captivated audiences.

And now, let’s explore the best gender-bender anime ever…

18 Ayakashi Triangle

A Fanservice-Driven Action-Comedy That Struggles to Gain Momentum

Ayakashi Triangle Festival

Ayakashi Triangle has had a tumultuous production journey, premiering in Winter 2023 but extending into the Summer anime lineup. Due to its delayed release, the series has unfortunately slipped into obscurity despite starting strongly. Nevertheless, it offers enough to warrant recommendation within the gender-bender genre.

The titular Ayakashi represent spirits that can pose dangers to energetic individuals. Main characters Kanade and Matsuri are capable of detecting these beings. The story takes a turn when a cat-like Ayakashi transforms Matsuri into a female, a change that Matsuri surprisingly adapts to rather smoothly.

17 Back Street Girls: Gokudols

A Series That is Either Hilarious or Unwatchably Absurd

Back Street Girls Anime

Back Street Girls Cast

Back Street Girls: Gokudols breaks the mold by rejecting social norms, crafting a narrative that is unapologetically bold. This series is polarizing; it’s either outrageously funny or painfully unbearable, depending on the viewer’s sensibilities.

The plot centers on three Yakuza members who reluctantly undergo a gender transformation to become idols for the sake of their boss’s profit. The series excels when it satirizes idol culture, drawing parallels between the idol industry and the Yakuza way. However, it is often bogged down by recycled humor, and the animation quality leaves much to be desired, sometimes barely surpassing the static feel of a manga page.

16 fighters

A Largely Forgettable Yet Enjoyable Experience

Kämpfer offers a lighthearted experience that, while enjoyable, is unlikely to leave a lasting impression. The series features average action, mediocre humor, and unoffensive characters, combining to create a watchable but forgettable anime.

The premise features Natsuru, who upon transformation becomes a magical girl, although her role is largely to combat other chosen girls rather than evil forces. Highlighting comedic moments, the narrative struggles to develop momentum, reaching a lackluster conclusion. Despite these shortcomings, Kämpfer represents a satisfactory watch for those seeking light entertainment.

15 Magical Girl Ore

An Unexpected Take on Magical Girl Tropes

Parodies of magical girl anime abound, with a few truly stellar examples. Shows like Is This a Zombie? deliver consistent humor, while Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! offers a solid comedic twist on standard magical girl tropes.

Among the magical girl offerings that embrace a gender-bender twist, Magical Girl Ore stands out, featuring a female lead who transforms into a strong male character during her magical transformations. While its humorous moments can be divisive, the show has its merits.

Saki, inspired by her mother, strives to become a magical girl to rescue her crush. To her surprise, her transformation results in a very masculine version of herself, complete with traditional magical girl attire. While the comedic premise centers around gender perceptions, the execution often veers into stereotypes and can result in Saki’s character feeling less engaging when in male form.

Nonetheless, Magical Girl Ore‘s supporting cast injects charm into the narrative, contributing to its overall appeal.

Though not explicitly gender-bender, Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! covers similar thematic ground while ultimately presenting a stronger narrative.

A noteworthy plot point occurs in season two when Kobayashi unwittingly switches genders, creating comedic gold as she navigates daily life unnoticed by her friends. This hidden transformation leads to a series of laugh-out-loud scenarios, particularly regarding her interactions with Tohru, her devoted dragon maid. Additionally, the innocent Kanna adds to Kobayashi’s amusing predicaments.

Although this subplot represents only a part of the larger narrative, it remains one of the most memorable aspects of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.

Following a hikikomori male who transforms into a younger female counterpart through the actions of his sister, this series sidesteps the protagonist’s former life, which could have added depth to the narrative.

While it might frustrate viewers seeking traditional gender-bender themes, Onimai shines as it follows the protagonist’s adaptation to life as a girl. The overarching narrative holds a surprising warmth as the protagonist navigates school life, despite its flawed moments.
