The lineage of Sony consoles within the first-person shooter (FPS) genre is both rich and extensive, tracing back to the original PlayStation. However, many gamers often associate FPS titles more closely with PC or Xbox platforms. This perception might stem from the historic showcases of *Call of Duty* during Xbox’s E3 presentations or the innate precision offered by mouse and keyboard controls for FPS gameplay.
It’s time to shift the narrative—Sony consoles are home to numerous exceptional FPS games that deserve ample recognition. In this article, we’ll present a curated list of standout FPS titles from each PlayStation console, ranked from least to most impactful.
9 PSP – Coded Arms
A For Effort, I Guess

During my tenure at GameStop, the release of the PSP generated significant enthusiasm, particularly for *Coded Arms*.Unfortunately, the game ultimately fell flat. Nevertheless, it holds the title of the best FPS on the PSP largely by default.
Despite its shortcomings, *Coded Arms* introduced some innovative elements for its time, including randomly generated levels with progressively challenging difficulty. Although such features are commonplace today, they were a refreshing part of handheld gaming back in 2005.
The gameplay experience aligns well with the PSP’s design, offering brief but engaging sessions perfect for the on-the-go gamer. However, the enjoyment diminishes with extended playtime.
Ultimately, the PSP’s control scheme limits its efficacy for FPS gameplay, resembling the frustration of playing *Super Mario 64* on a Nintendo DS. While there are a few FPS options on the PSP, *Coded Arms* remains the standout choice.
8 PS Vita – Killzone: Mercenary
A Legitimate FPS Experience

With dual analog sticks, the PS Vita proved to be far more accommodating for FPS games.*Killzone: Mercenary* successfully bridged the gap, offering a console-like experience that other handheld titles, such as *Resistance: Burning Skies* and *Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified*, could not achieve.
This entry in the Killzone franchise impressed with its authenticity, showcasing a development process that prioritized gameplay quality over gimmicks. Unlike alternative handheld adaptations, *Killzone: Mercenary* stands as a fully realized title, delivering a thrilling experience.
Despite some reliance on the Vita’s unique features, such as touch controls for melee actions, the game excels by focusing on providing core FPS thrills, reminiscent of traditional console gameplay.
7 PSVR2 – Pistol Whip
Feel The Rhythm

As a prior skeptic of modern virtual reality, I tend to be selective about VR titles that warrant my attention. However, *Pistol Whip* manages to impress, presenting itself as more than just a gimmicky experience. Even outside the VR scope, this title offers substantial entertainment value that is enhanced when played in virtual reality.
This exhilarating title skillfully marries elements from *Beat Saber* and *Superhot*, creating an addictive gameplay loop that stands out in the VR niche. While it may not be a must-have system seller, it certainly warrants a spot on your playlist if you’re equipped with a VR headset.
6 PSVR – Superhot
Super. Hot. Super. Hot.

Among the myriad of excellent options, *Superhot* emerges as a standout title in FPS history. It transcends traditional genre boundaries, evoking the feel of a John Wick simulator. The unique gameplay mechanic revolves around the concept that time only progresses when the player moves, which allows for creative strategy and impressive stunts, such as dodging bullets or disarming foes mid-action.
The game’s distinctive visual style and engaging mechanics result in an experience that’s both refreshing and thoroughly enjoyable. For an even more immersive experience, I highly recommend playing *Superhot* in VR, where game mechanics truly shine.
5 PS1 – Medal of Honor
Answering the Call

Today’s gamers may not fully appreciate the significance of *Medal of Honor*, a trailblazer in the World War II FPS genre that predated *Call of Duty*.Produced in part by Stephen Spielberg, this game excelled at providing a cinematic narrative in a gaming format.
What sets *Medal of Honor* apart is its ability to address serious themes within the gameplay, moving beyond the simplistic “boomer shooter” format to offer a deeper storytelling experience.
The legacy of *Medal of Honor* is evident in the success of modern FPS titles, leaving a lasting imprint on franchises such as *Call of Duty*.Its critical role in shaping the genre cannot be overstated, especially considering its debut on the PS1.
4 PS2 – Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30
A Tactical FPS Masterpiece

The game distinguishes itself through tactical gameplay, requiring players to strategize and make use of suppressing fire rather than resorting to mindless shooting. This deeper approach to the World War II experience adds another layer of engagement, making it a memorable title in the FPS landscape.
3 PS4 – Titanfall 2
Still Waiting For That Sequel

Launched in 2016, *Titanfall 2* faced an uphill battle, caught between the releases of *Battlefield 1* and *Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare*.While these franchises boast dominant legacies, *Titanfall 2* deserves recognition for its unparalleled, fast-paced gameplay.
This FPS offers unmatched fluidity in its mechanics, whether playing as a swift human pilot or a formidable Titan. The multiplayer mode is particularly engaging, providing countless hours of addictive fun. The campaign is also noteworthy, adding to the game’s overall brilliance.
2 PS5 – Resident Evil Village
(Not So) Stupid Man Thing

Reflecting on the current FPS landscape, which is rife with extraction shooters and battle royales, I find myself leaning more towards experiences on my own terms. Despite being categorized as survival horror, *Resident Evil Village* excels at delivering FPS-like mechanics and thrilling action sequences that overshadow its predecessors.
What’s particularly appealing about *Village* is its innovative twists; one moment you’re evading a towering vampire, and the next, you’re navigating a dangerous factory, eliminating foes with finesse. The evolution of Capcom’s approach has refined the gunplay and action within the franchise, marking a significant turnaround from the missteps of earlier entries.
1 PS3 – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
The Call of Duty GOAT

Regardless of contemporary opinions on the *Call of Duty* franchise, its significance during the PS3 era is undeniable, exemplified by *Modern Warfare 2*.The unforgettable “No Russian” mission remains ingrained in gaming history, and while the story might be ludicrous, it embodies the quintessential *Call of Duty* experience.
Players journey across diverse terrains, engaging in exhilarating combat and experiencing dramatic set pieces. The score heightens the action, creating a perfect backdrop for one of the finest *Call of Duty* campaigns to date.
However, *Modern Warfare 2* primarily rose to fame through its multiplayer mode, which rivaled *Halo 3* during that console generation. While the genre has evolved into battle royales, the nostalgia for the dynamic multiplayer experience of *Modern Warfare 2* is still palpable amongst gaming enthusiasts.
