As we dive into 2024, the landscape of platformers has undergone an intriguing shift. Notably, Nintendo, long considered the genre’s flagship, has opted out of the race, creating an opportunity for indie developers and various AAA studios to shine without being overshadowed.
This year’s discussions surrounding platformers have been refreshingly engaging, featuring innovative reimaginations of established formulas, a surge of Metroidvania titles, and exciting releases for the PS5 platform.
While I’ll be discussing several standout games, it’s important to note that the final selections and rankings are not solely my decision. We focus exclusively on releases from January through November, keeping contenders like AntonBlast out of the list for this evaluation.

The richness of combat skills enhances gameplay significantly, and while its time-loop mechanics may not reach the narrative depth of titles like Outer Wilds, they contribute well to the overall experience. Experimenting with plant life brings a fresh twist to level design, making it one of the most captivating titles of the year.

Getting Over Each Other
Chained Together offers a unique twist on the formula seen in games like Only Up and Getting Over It, transforming it into a multiplayer experience where you and friends attempt to escape a hellish landscape.
The game’s quirky aesthetic and inherent hilarity of watching friends drag each other back down elevate it within the platforming genre. While it may lack some mechanical depth, the cooperative challenge and laughter it provides are undeniable highlights.

Flying Off the Page
In terms of artistic excellence, The Plucky Squire stands out with its enchanting storybook world where players navigate the pages before exploring the real world. It captures the essence of childhood gaming with its whimsical adventures.
