Top Mistwalker JRPGs: Which One Reigns Supreme?

Mistwalker, the esteemed studio founded by Final Fantasy legend Hironobu Sakaguchi, remains a hidden gem in the realm of Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs). Since its inception following Sakaguchi’s departure from Square Enix, Mistwalker has consistently produced compelling titles, yet it hasn’t achieved the acclaim it deserves. Nevertheless, the studio’s portfolio features several exceptional games that are well worth exploring. So, among these remarkable JRPGs, which one truly stands out as the best from Mistwalker?

Mistwalker has delivered striking titles like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Fantasian, each deserving of attention from JRPG enthusiasts. However, when evaluating these games based on various criteria including visuals, narrative strength, character development, and gameplay mechanics, one game consistently emerges as the frontrunner.

Highlighting the Best Mistwalker JRPG

For many players, Lost Odyssey holds a special place as a standout title not just in the Mistwalker lineup, but in the broader JRPG genre. Interestingly, this game was one of my first encounters with JRPGs, and it remains one of my top favorites. Growing up with only a Nintendo handheld for Pokémon and an Xbox console, I had limited exposure to the genre until I borrowed a PlayStation 2 and discovered the magic of Final Fantasy XII. My curiosity led me to Lost Odyssey, and I found myself enamored with its depth and intricacies.

The narrative of Lost Odyssey is refreshingly unique, exploring the lives of immortals and supported by poignant visual novel-style storytelling elements scattered throughout the game. Its turn-based combat system still resonates with players today, providing a satisfying experience even by modern standards. Regrettably, my journey came to a halt when my game disc became scratched, leaving me at approximately 75% completion. This experience only fuels my hope for a remastered version, allowing me to finally complete this extraordinary tale. Among the impressive lineup of Mistwalker games, Lost Odyssey reigns supreme in my opinion. That being said, my adventures in Fantasian on my iPad also left a lasting impression, and I look forward to revisiting it with the upcoming Fantasian: Neo Dimension.

Fantasian: Neo Dimension is set to launch on December 5, 2024, for multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
