The qualities that make Avowed appealing are similarly evident in The Outer Worlds, which features highly enjoyable gameplay and memorable companions, making it a must-play—especially with a sequel on the horizon.
However, it’s important to note that some of the challenges present in Avowed, such as limited enemy diversity and somewhat simplistic systems, are also evident here. If you’re searching for a sci-fi mirror of Avowed, The Outer Worlds is a perfect fit.
7 Fallout: New Vegas
One of the Best
Diving deeper into Obsidian’s history leads us to Fallout: New Vegas, a title often cited as the best in the franchise. While I might not completely agree due to its bugs, the game’s overall quality is undeniable and deserves to be experienced by all.

A Classic We Want to See Return
While I appreciated Avowed’s storytelling, my favorite aspect was undeniably the combat, reminiscent of the exhilarating moments in Dishonored.
Dishonored elevates combat to a new level, combining action with puzzle-like mechanics. Its synergy between combat, abilities, and stealth enhances the gameplay experience. The freedom to approach missions in diverse ways contributes to the game’s appeal.
Reflecting on my time in Avowed, I often found myself seeking innovative strategies to take down foes, making me eager to revisit Dishonored. It’s high time Bethesda considers bringing this beloved franchise back.
5 The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Close Shut the Jaws of Oblivion
It’s natural to compare Avowed to an Elder Scrolls title, particularly Oblivion, my personal favorite in the series.
Though Avowed’s world may lack the extensive openness of Oblivion’s Tamriel, it provides a similar thrill in discovering dungeons and engaging enemies. Moreover, like Oblivion, Avowed maintains an excellent balance between its main storyline and side quests.
I could easily lose myself in either title, completing quests and unraveling the world’s secrets. With a rumored Oblivion remake in development, I’m excited to see how it will enhance the game’s combat mechanics.
4 Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
An Underrated Gem
Among all the RPGs to consider after Avowed, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning stands out as a nostalgic experience that might remind you of early 2010s gameplay.
This title features a gameplay style, atmosphere, and presentation that aligns well with Avowed. It appears that Kingdoms of Amalur may have even inspired some aspects of Avowed’s design.
Both games draw from classic RPG influences while simplifying mechanics for accessibility, delivering solid gameplay that remains entertaining. No dice rolls or stat checks required—just pure fun. Over the years, Kingdoms of Amalur has achieved sleeper hit status, and I believe Avowed is on a similar trajectory.
3 Mass Effect
One of the Best Games Ever Made
Let me explain.
Similar to Avowed, Mass Effect may show some rough edges, indicative of the time and effort spent enriching its world and characters. Yet, it remains a fantastic title.
Mass Effect features enjoyable companion-based combat, even though Avowed might surpass it in this department. However, the series’ defining characteristic is its storytelling, which shines through not only in the primary narrative but across all character arcs.
My interactions with Avowed’s companions were unexpectedly delightful, igniting fond memories of my time spent with the characters in Mass Effect.
And yes, the voice actor for Garrus also lends their voice to Avowed.
2 Fable 2
I Need a Hero
At first glance, Fable 2 may seem like a less fitting recommendation due to its more action-oriented approach, but there’s a valid connection here.
While Avowed offers choices, they do not compare to the impactful decisions conveyed in Fable 2. So, how does Fable 2 align with Avowed? Primarily through its engaging combat mechanics.
The joy of playing Fable lies in its freedom to pursue your own path and make choices within its world. If you’ve completed Avowed and are in the mood for an entertaining action RPG, Fable 2 is an excellent option.
1 Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
A Perfect RPG Experience
Though Avowed made a strong impression upon its release, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 promises to deliver an even more compelling RPG experience.
If you found enjoyment in Avowed but desired something deeper, this title is the perfect follow-up. It builds upon the foundations set by Avowed and offers a more immersive, rewarding experience.
