Companion intriguingly blends familiar elements from the horror genre with an innovative perspective on the future of relationships. The story follows Josh, who embarks on a romantic adventure with a robot named Iris, unaware that she is an artificial being. However, after a serene retreat in the woods, the film takes a dark turn, transforming what began as a romantic narrative into a terrifying horror experience.
Fans of horror cinema typically seek two key elements: terrifying moments and dramatic kills. While Companion may not feature the most gruesome deaths in recent horror history, such as those seen in films like Abigail or Smile 2, it does present its fair share of shocking and memorable fatalities. In this article, we will examine some of the film’s most notable deaths, ranked by their level of gruesomeness, but beware of spoilers!
WARNING! Spoilers ahead!
6. Here
Knife To The Back

Among the film’s most surprisingly painful deaths is that of Kat. After witnessing multiple fatalities, including an officer’s demise, she decides she’s had enough. Ready to cash in her share and leave, Josh tries to convince her to stay, but she firmly reminds him that she is not a toy to be manipulated. Misunderstanding Josh’s intentions, Patrick, another robot, fatally misinterprets “stop her”as a command to stab her in the back. The audience is left to assume that she ultimately succumbs to her injuries off-screen.
5. Sid
Surprise Bullets

As the plot reaches its climax, technicians Sid and Teddy arrive to listen to Josh’s account of events. They aim to retrieve Iris for a reboot, unaware that her hard drive is still intact within her chest. Amidst the chaos of his decisions, Josh sends Patrick to confront the technicians. In a chilling encounter, Patrick, disguised as Officer Hendrix, stands ominously in the yard and kills Sid with a gunshot. The excitement escalates during the chase that follows, which also leads to Eli, who unexpectedly meets a similar fate when he’s shot, though that’s relatively less dramatic.
4. Sergey
Rocked And Knifed

Sergey kicks off the fatal chain of events as the first victim in the film, signaling the grim fate awaiting others. His character is far from virtuous, likely involved with dubious dealings. It’s no surprise when he attempts to make advances on Iris, leading to a violent confrontation. The struggle results in Sergey cracking his skull against a rock, only to retaliate and attempt to choke Iris. In the ensuing struggle, she plunges a knife into his neck, resulting in an absurdly excessive amount of blood, reminiscent of scenes from classic horror films.
3. Patrick
Taser To The Mouth

Advertised heavily in trailers, Iris’s robotic nature is merely the beginning of the revelations. Shortly after Sergey’s demise, Eli discovers a startling truth: his boyfriend Patrick is also a robot. Unlike Iris, Patrick is aware of his artificial existence, and despite this, he shares a genuine love with Eli. Ultimately, overwhelmed by grief over Eli’s perceived loss, Patrick chooses to end his own life via an intense taser to the mouth. Although this scene may not unleash torrents of blood, the concept itself is unsettling and visceral.
2. Josh
Wine Opener

A notable aspect of horror films is the excess of foreshadowing, and Companion does not shy away from this trope. The use of a wine opener as a weapon indicates someone will inevitably meet a grim fate, and predictably, that individual is Josh. While he presents himself as a misunderstood hero, his darker intentions are revealed through the narrative. Ultimately, after believing he has outsmarted Iris, he faces his own demise when she unexpectedly drives the wine opener into his head, leaving him to collapse in a dramatic and gruesome defeat.
1. Officer Hendrix
Punched To A Bloody Pulp

This pivotal scene masterfully combines suspense with dark humor. After escaping from Josh’s car, Iris gets pulled over by Officer Hendrix. Despite the tension, she cleverly utilizes a language app to answer his questions. Unbeknownst to the cop, she confesses to multiple murders, all while Patrick stealthily approaches in the background. Recognizing the potential danger, Iris begins to panic when Patrick arrives on the scene and violently assaults Officer Hendrix, brutally punching him until his face is left a bloody mess. This impactful moment perfectly encapsulates the film’s blend of horror and unexpected humor.
