Overview
- One Piece showcases a variety of unconventional weaponry influenced by the unique abilities granted by Devil Fruits.
- Characters like Mr. 5 utilize their bodily fluids as weapons, whereas Big Mom infuses life into objects through the souls she collects.
- Usopp employs Pop Greens in combat, and even non-living items, such as swords, can inherit Zoan Devil Fruits.
The realm of One Piece brims with peculiarities. Compared to many anime series, its artistic and thematic choices are strikingly unique, particularly regarding the weapons wielded by its diverse characters. Given that the plot revolves around battles among pirates and governmental factions, weaponry plays a crucial role.
While traditional arms like swords and firearms are present, the infusion of Devil Fruits introduces extraordinary and bizarre weaponry choices. As a result, we witness a vast array of creative attack methods not typically found in other narratives.
1. Mucus
Characters: Gem “Mr. 5″& Trebol
- Associated Devil Fruit(s): Bomu Bomu no Mi and Beta Beta no Mi
Gem, also known as Mr. 5, served as an officer agent within the criminal faction Baroque Works, which aimed to conquer Alabasta. His unique Devil Fruit ability enabled him to turn any part of his body into explosive projectiles. Although his physical strength was not remarkable, his explosive capabilities provided him with a strategic advantage, especially when opponents were out of reach.
One of the more unconventional attacks involved him flicking his nose-picking boogers at enemies. This peculiar method, to the disdain of characters like Zoro who expressed disgust when encountering one, posed the question of why he relied on snot instead of more practical explosives.
Trebol, another prominent member of the Donquixote Pirates, applied mucus differently. His goo was larger, stickier, and capable of creating formidable attacks. He cleverly utilized it to disguise himself as a Logia user, misleading foes until he opted to reveal the truth. This wily employment of such a gross substance showcases both creative ingenuity and a touch of villainy.
2. Food
Characters: The Three Sweet Commanders, Charlotte Perospero, and Others
- Associated Devil Fruit(s) : Mochi Mochi no Mi, Shibo Shibo no Mi, Bisu Bisu no Mi, Pero Pero no Mi, and many others.
Combat involving food becomes especially intense within the One Piece universe, notably among the Big Mom Pirates. This crew features skilled pirates who wield the power of various food-based Devil Fruits, transforming ordinary edible items into lethal weapons. Characters such as Charlotte Katakuri manipulate mochi, Charlotte Smoothie wields juice, and Charlotte Cracker crafts biscuits for battle.
Other notable food-derived abilities include those of Charlotte Perospero, who controls candy, along with a cooking-themed Devil Fruit that can convert inanimate objects into food at will. Curiously, the crew’s members often serve as “ministers”of their respective food types, governing islands that correlate with their abilities in Totto Land—whether by coincidence or design remains ambiguous.
The versatility of their powers lies in how they utilize the properties of the food to enhance their capabilities. For example, mochi’s elasticity and the hardness of biscuits are exaggerated to make them formidable offensive tools. However, despite the intense battles, many of these creations are notorious for their awful taste, a fitting representation of the infamous reputation surrounding Devil Fruits.
3. Special Homies
Characters: Big Mom & Nami
- Associated Devil Fruit(s) : Soru Soru no Mi
The concept of Homies stems from Big Mom’s powerful Devil Fruit, which allows her to control spirits fearfully attracted to her. She creatively repurposes these souls by animating inanimate objects, imbuing them with vitality and personality, often marked by charming facial expressions.
Big Mom’s ‘special homies’ are particularly formidable, enriched by her own soul essence. Notable homies include Zeus, a sentient storm cloud, Prometheus, a living sun, and Napoleon, a sentient sword, all of which can unleash devastating attacks. However, Nami’s cleverness allowed her to acquire Zeus, who now fights alongside her using the abilities derived from his original creator.
After Zeus’s departure, Big Mom introduced Hera, a newer homie who attempted to combine forces with Prometheus and Napoleon to create a powerful entity named Misery. This interconnectedness of the homies illustrates a dynamic aspect of their capabilities, with Zeus now inhabiting Nami’s clima-tact, blending with the atmospheric conditions it manipulates.
4. Pop Greens
Characters: Usopp & Heracles
- Associated Devil Fruit(s): None
Pop Greens are remarkable plants discovered by Usopp during his time in the Boin Archipelago. These extraordinary plants can swiftly grow from seeds into full-sized flora, and Usopp learned to harness their potential from his mentor, Heracles, during the timeskip.
Armed with knowledge about Pop Greens, Usopp incorporates a diverse range of plant-based weapons into his combat strategy. From traditional fighters like the venus flytrap, dubbed “humandrake,”to unconventional creations that take the shape of shurikens, banana boats, and colossal wolves capable of creating shockwaves, Usopp’s adaptability shines through. His updated slingshot, Kuro Kabuto, also possesses transformative properties, becoming a fearsome weapon upon contact with water.
5. Zoan Weapons
Characters: Babe “Mr. 4”, Spandam, and Others
- Associated Devil Fruit(s) : Dachshund, Zou Zou, & Sarah Sarah, Model Axolotl.
Users of Zoan Devil Fruits gain the ability to embody the characteristics of the associated animal. Interestingly, these fruits can also grant sentience to inanimate objects that consume them, which has led to many unconventional situations.
For instance, Lassoo, a sentient bazooka, and Funkfreed, an enormous sword, both demonstrate how weapons can take on lives of their own due to Zoan consumption. They function more like companions than mere tools, although their combat prowess often mirrors that of their owners. Funkfreed, like his master Spandam, lacks the strength to fulfill his potential, revealing the quirks associated with these bizarre transformations.
Another intriguing case is Smiley, whose toxic abilities present a unique and lethal form of weaponry, showcasing the diverse interpretations of Devil Fruit powers and the humanized undertones of weaponry in One Piece.
