When exploring the best Commanders to use in MTG Duskmourn, several options emerge as standouts. After previewing the set and cracking packs, I’ve identified Commanders that I believe could be highly impactful or surprisingly enjoyable to play. They cater to various deck archetypes, but not all Commanders made the list. Some honorable mentions include Nashi, Searcher in the Dark, The Jolly Balloon Man, and Marina Vendrell.
Another noteworthy card from MTG Duskmourn is Tyvar, the Pummeler, which ranks among my top favorites. However, he didn’t secure a spot in my selection of the best Commanders from the entire set. This ranking is, of course, subjective; your preferred Commanders or choices for the best might vary.
The Best Commanders in MTG Duskmourn
1) Valgavoth, Terror Eater
One of the premier Commanders in MTG Duskmourn is Valgavoth, Terror Eater, even with its hefty 9 mana cost. While expensive, its immense value justifies the cost. This 9/9 creature has flying and lifelink, along with Ward: Sacrifice three nonland permanents, effectively increasing the cost for opponents trying to remove it with direct removal.
This legendary creature introduces an exciting gameplay mechanic: when a card you don’t control is sent to an opponent’s graveyard, it gets exiled instead, akin to Leyline of the Void. You can cast these exiled cards during your turn, using life as a resource instead of mana. In a mono-black deck, numerous strategies exist to gain life for casting spells, making Valgavoth a remarkable addition to MTG decks.
2) Kona, Rescue Beastie
One of the mechanics I enjoy in MTG is cheating cards into play rapidly, making Kona, Rescue Beastie a top contender for the best Commanders in Duskmourn. This 4/3 creature with Survival costs just 4 mana and allows you to put a permanent from your hand into play during your second main phase as long as Kona is tapped.
Many strategies can tap a creature without going for damage! You may opt for aggressive play or use Convoke strategies. Pairing Kona with Chord of Calling could let you pull a massive creature from your deck and play it at the end of your turn, setting you up for a potentially game-winning moment.
3) Zimone, All-Questioning
Zimone, All-Questioning ranks as one of my favorite and least favorite Commanders in MTG Duskmourn. Math and prime numbers aren’t my strong suit, though I appreciate what the card brings. This Commander demands knowledge of prime numbers—it even showcases primes needed for gameplay!
At the start of your end step, if a land enters play under your control and you have a prime number of lands, you create Primo, the Indivisible, a legendary green/blue Fractal creature with a base of 0/0. Then, you place +1/+1 counters on it equal to the prime in play. While maintaining multiple Primos can be tricky due to the legendary rule, using Helm of the Host could generate non-legendary tokens over many turns, turning this into a formidable strategy.
4) Marvin, Murderous Mimic
Marvin, Murderous Mimic is a powerful Commander in MTG Duskmourn, albeit tricky to build around. This colorless 2/2 creature possesses all activated abilities of your other creatures, provided they don’t share a name with Marvin. The right combination in your deck can lead to overwhelming success.
Imagine pairing Marvin with a host of Myr creatures, using him to toggle various abilities and set up infinite combo opportunities. The versatility in his abilities truly opens up a realm of possibilities!
5) The Mindshinner
My personal favorite Commander to utilize is The Mindskinner. This 10/1 creature cannot be blocked, and I would definitely seek ways to make it indestructible to avoid damage from common spells like Lightning Bolt. The Mindskinner’s unique ability states that when a source you control inflicts damage on an opponent, prevent that damage and have all opponents mill that many cards.
This card could quickly create animosity at the table, as hitting one player results in all opponents milling. You might want to consider defenses like Platinum Angel or Platinum Empyrion to shield yourself. With the appropriate setup, this Commander can enable fast and effective milling strategies.
