As an enthusiast of both Rogue and Metroidvania genres, I can confidently say that finding successful blends of these two styles is quite a challenge. While there are a few standout Roguevania titles, many others unfortunately fall short.

Given the scarcity of truly effective Roguevanias, this list takes a liberal approach. Although each of the mentioned games successfully incorporates Rogue-like gameplay, some lean more toward platforming than traditional Metroidvania mechanics. Nonetheless, we believe you will appreciate these selections—each features enough elements from both genres to warrant their inclusion. This spectrum ranges from well-known hits to hidden gems that you might not have encountered before.

10 GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon

Death Is Only the Beginning

When evaluated for its visuals and gameplay, GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon would rank higher on this list. Its stunning Ukiyo-e-inspired graphics burst with vibrant colors and intricate details that will leave you amazed.

However, the gameplay experience is a bit more complex. It presents a steep learning curve, with players facing multiple deaths before mastering its mechanics. Once you acclimate, a captivating adventure awaits. While it leans toward the Rogue side due to its combat-centric focus, the game does include features like a mini-map and exploration opportunities, classic hallmarks of any Metroidvania title.

If you enjoy challenging Rogue adventures, this title should definitely be on your radar.

9 Abyss Odyssey

The Darkness Beckons

I’ll be candid—I’m still disappointed that Abyss Odyssey never found its way to a Nintendo console, where it truly belongs. Much like the previous title, its art style is mesmerizing.

This game presents a unique interpretation of the Roguevania concept, incorporating combat mechanics akin to those found in fighting games. While only three playable characters are available, players can capture enemy souls, allowing them to control a variety of foes and bosses.

The cooperative gameplay feature is another highlight, making it easier to tackle the game’s challenging difficulty. However, it remains predominantly in the fighting genre, even as it retains Rogue-like elements—complete with mini-maps for exploration—making it a mild contender for this list.

8 Weapon Hacker

The Unknown Challenger

To be perfectly honest, I was unaware of Weapon Hacker before compiling this list, which is somewhat surprising, as it exemplifies the Roguevania genre that emerged five years ago. Developed by a solo indie creator, it offers a distillation of the Metroidvania experience through quick, procedurally-generated adventures suitable for quick play sessions.

Despite its simpler art style compared to other contenders, players focused on the Roguevania experience will find plenty to enjoy here.

7 Chasm

Back Into the Pit

If you’ve seen my previous articles, you might recall that Chasm frequently makes an appearance. For all its flaws, it serves as a commendable example of the Roguevania genre.

The game features a rich pixelated aesthetic combined with fierce adversaries to conquer. Defeating significant foes provides new skills enabling further exploration—a core aspect of traditional Metroidvania design.

While the narrative is engaging, it might not stand out as the game’s strongest element. Additionally, players may find certain difficulty spikes challenging. Nevertheless, it remains a noteworthy entry worth experiencing.

6 Ghost 1.0

Ghost in the Machine

In Ghost 1.0, you control an android that plays a pivotal role in the overarching narrative. This unique setup allows for gameplay mechanics like becoming incorporeal and interacting with various hosts. The game offers two modes: a traditional Metroidvania experience and an additional survival mode rich in Rogue-like elements.

Players can explore an expansive space station to uncover strong weapons and valuable passive upgrades, making Ghost 1.0 a thoroughly engaging example of the Roguevania genre.

5 ScourgeBringer

The Suffering Tree

Admittedly, a part of me harbors some frustration toward ScourgeBringer. Despite my platforming expertise, this game has consistently challenged me. While I have adapted to many of its mechanics, it remains difficult.

Regardless of my personal struggles, ScourgeBringer is a visually stunning and distinct platformer that doesn’t heavily lean into the Metroidvania aspect. Nonetheless, it opens up freedom to explore and acquire formidable weapons.

Players can utilize resources to unlock new skills from the Chiming Tree, which is essential for survival throughout the game. Mastering mobility and combat is crucial if you wish to triumph over ScourgeBringer.

4 Rogue Legacy

Everybody’s Favorite

Even if you aren’t particularly fond of the Roguevania genre, you’ve likely heard of Rogue Legacy, which has greatly contributed to the rise in popularity of the rogue format in recent years.

This genealogical adventure spans multiple lifetimes, rewarding exploration through perilous environments. Players face daunting bosses that test their dodging abilities through bullet hell-style mechanics.

In addition to the various character classes available, players can inherit amusing traits, adding a humorous twist to gameplay. Yet, because of its platforming nature, Rogue Legacy ranks lower among pure Metroidvanias, placing it further down this list.

3 Sundered: Eldritch Edition

Tentacles FTW

The team at Thunder Lotus has done an exceptional job with Sundered: Eldritch Edition. While hardcore adventures aren’t usually my cup of tea, they have created a well-constructed experience here.

This Roguevania beautifully incorporates Cthulhu mythology as players navigate an ever-shifting world. Players earn valuable perks that enhance gameplay, paired with fluid and customizable combat mechanics.

The game boasts multiple endings, complex boss battles, and the option to either resist or embrace the powers granted to you, adding depth and challenge.

In summary, Sundered: Eldritch Edition serves as a wonderful representation of the Roguevania genre, even if it’s not the ultimate example.

2 Ultros

Seeded in the Garden of Madness

If it were solely my decision, Ultros wouldn’t hold this high a position. Although visually captivating and innovative, I found it to be somewhat tedious.

Nevertheless, many players have fallen in love with this psychedelic Metroidvania, so let’s explore what makes it a phenomenal Roguevania.

The narrative begins as you awaken within a Sarcophagus housing a god-like entity, causing time itself to unravel. Every time you complete a path, the quest rewinds, creating a cycle reminiscent of Groundhog Day.

Fortunately, players have ways to retain knowledge and powers gained during their journey, opening up new areas and threats as they piece together the mystery of the Sarcophagus and their role in this enigmatic adventure.

1 A Robot Named Fight

Fight to the Finish

Before I hear any groans, let me clarify: while all the games mentioned here are commendable, I firmly believe that A Robot Named Fight stands as the quintessential Roguevania.

This game excels in fully encapsulating both genres, presenting streamlined gameplay, potent weapons, and procedurally generated chaos that keeps each session fresh.

As the last robot battling the horror unleashed by the Megabeast, players experience a game filled with vibes reminiscent of Super Metroid, infused with surprising elements of body horror.

Although the game can be challenging, acquiring powerful weaponry and upgrade modules improves your chances of survival on this harrowing journey.
