If you’ve read my previous articles, it’s clear that I am an enthusiastic fan of the Metroidvania genre. Among the various titles I’ve experienced, my strongest affinity lies with the retro-themed adventures, particularly those showcasing pixel art. Nothing embodies the essence of retro gaming quite like pixel visuals.
For the purposes of this discussion, I will consider both sprites and pixelated graphics as synonymous. This allows for a more diverse range of remarkable games and evokes that heartfelt nostalgia associated with classic gaming.
Presented below is a curated list of the Best Pixel Art Metroidvanias, featuring a mix of well-established titles alongside innovative roguelikes, lighthearted cartoonish delights, and challenging Souls-like experiences. These selections exemplify some of the most outstanding contributions to the genre in recent years.
10 Chasm
Deeper and Deeper
While one might assume that the marriage of Metroidvanias and roguelikes would be seamless, achieving this blend effectively can be quite challenging. A notable exception is Chasm, which immerses players in a hazardous, mysterious world, beautifully rendered in pixel art.
The game does have its shortcomings, particularly in its slightly linear progression. Although its roguelike nature suggests a need for creativity, the game occasionally takes a more straightforward approach than expected.
Despite the areas where it falters, Chasm stands as a commendable addition to the roster of pixel-art Metroidvanias.
9 9 Years of Shadows

Crowdfunding a project always presents a delicate balance. As a backer of 9 Years of Shadows, my expectations were high, and while they weren’t entirely realized, the adventure still provided a satisfying Metroidvania experience.
Set against a mythological backdrop in a dilapidated world, the game’s narrative centers on the rejuvenating powers of music and art. Initially portrayed in monochrome, the introduction of Europa and her ghostly companion brings vibrant color and symbolizes hope.
Despite its brevity and somewhat linear gameplay, 9 Years of Shadows is packed with engaging and colorful moments, marking a solid debut from Halberd Studios and indie.io.
8 Panzer Paladin
Mech Knights Against Demons
Although Panzer Paladin does not strictly fit the Metroidvania label, I would confidently argue it qualifies based on my extensive experience with the genre.
The adventure unfolds as players control a mecha, navigating levels to activate mechanisms, uncover secrets, and engage in battle against demonic foes. This title has a nostalgic arcade vibe with contemporary flair, incorporating significant boss battles and the ability to craft inventive weapons.
All considered, Panzer Paladin is an exceptional offering from Tribute Games, exemplifying the essence of exciting gameplay.
7.Gato Roboto
Metroidvania Catnip
Combining my admiration for cats with top-notch video gaming, Gato Roboto offers both hilarity and unique gameplay. Developed by Doinksoft and published by Devolver, this charming Metroidvania features a tiny cat piloting a formidable robotic suit while battling nefarious creatures and a villainous doctor.
The game’s combat mechanics are solid, and it makes exploration and puzzle-solving enjoyable. My only critique is its brevity; I found myself wishing for additional DLC to further immerse myself in its world.
Nonetheless, Gato Roboto stands out as an expertly crafted Metroidvania that appeals to all cat enthusiasts.
6 The Messenger
Time-Travelling Ninja
The Messenger presents players with a dual nature experience. Initially, it seems to be a straightforward tribute to NES platforming, but it evolves into a Metroidvania format reminiscent of SNES titles.
The NES portions shine with superb gameplay, while the subsequent SNES sections feel less cohesive, impacting the overall experience. Nevertheless, The Messenger retains its charm as a delightful adventure crafted by the same team behind Sea of Stars.
5 Blasphemous 2
Repent, Sinners!
Although I generally steer clear of Souls-like games due to their punishing difficulty, Blasphemous 2 captivated me with its compelling narrative and execution. The game successfully builds on its predecessor, offering an exhilarating and beautifully rendered experience.
Its gothic aesthetic and intense challenges weave an unforgettable atmosphere that encapsulates the spirit of the Metroidvania genre.
4 Momodora: Moonlit Farewell
Ring the Bell
The Momodora series is synonymous with breathtaking pixel art, and Moonlit Farewell stands as the pinnacle of this franchise. In a world torn apart by demonic forces unleashed by a mystical bell, players must navigate both serene and treacherous landscapes.
Amid the challenge, players can customize their combat style with various potent Sigils, ensuring a dynamic and engaging experience. The artwork is exquisite, featuring whimsical designs that elevate the game’s beauty.
3 Astalon: Tears of the Earth
Survive the Tower

With a visually stunning aesthetic crafted by Matt Kap and LABS WORKS, Astalon: Tears of the Earth is an engaging, though challenging, title. Players navigate a post-apocalyptic landscape while controlling three different heroes on a quest to save their village.
Central to the gameplay is a mysterious tower that separates them from success, resulting in frequent deaths. The twist? One hero has made a pact with a devilish entity, allowing for resurrective gameplay mechanics. Switching between characters like Arias the Fighter, Kyuli the Rogue, and Algus the Wizard adds depth in both combat and puzzle-solving.
Astalon is truly a rewarding Metroidvania experience that is worth the effort.
2 Axiom Verge
Ghost in the Machine
Upon acquiring my Vita, Axiom Verge was among the first titles I sought. Not only does it feature mesmerizing art, but it’s also a remarkable example of a Metroidvania developed solely by one individual.
The game employs a unique Glitch system that innovatively subverts some conventions of the genre, offering a fresh gameplay dynamic. Although I found the sequel disappointing, the original remains a must-play experience.
1 Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse
Me and My Genie
My time spent playing titles from WayForward has been delightful, but none stand out quite like Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse. This game is arguably the series’ only genuine Metroidvania entry, with a clever premise that subverts player expectations.
Shantae, having lost her powers in the previous installment, must now obtain magical pirate relics to reclaim her strength. Teaming up with her frenemy Risky Boots adds excitement to the adventure.
With a captivating storyline, enjoyable gameplay, and stunning visuals, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is a charming experience that I hope WayForward considers replicating in future projects.
