Top 10 Indie Games of 2024 That Failed to Impress

Top 10 Indie Games of 2024 That Failed to Impress

While celebrating the creativity and innovation of indie video games is often the focus, it is equally important to provide critical feedback. This year, several indie titles appeared promising yet ultimately failed to deliver an engaging experience. This list highlights indie games that, despite their intriguing concepts, left us wanting more.

In a departure from traditional countdowns, this list ranks the entries in reverse order, starting with the most tolerable and concluding with the least impressive indie game of the year.

10 Parry Nightmare

Dream a Little Nightmare

Most Disappointing Indie Games Parry Nightmare

Platform

PC

Publisher

Phoenixx Inc.

Genre

Bullet Hell

Release Date

March 21, 2024

In Parry Nightmare, players step into the shoes of a character lost in a dream world, assisted by a demonic sidekick named Honno-Chan. This title attempts to blend the tower defense and bullet hell genres, where players must “parry”enemy attacks while creating openings for Honno to attack.

Unfortunately, the game’s design quickly becomes frustrating. With limited power-ups and visibility, players must navigate through relentless swarms of enemies. The progression curve is steep, and while you are not obligated to defeat all foes, you need to overcome a daunting number to complete levels. Combined with a punishing enemy design, the overall experience felt more like a nightmare than a dream.

9 The Dark Cave

Retro Darkness

Most Disappointing Indie Games The Dark Cave

Platform

PC

Publisher

2P Games

Genre

Tactical RPG

Release Date

July 15, 2024

Despite the abundance of excellent tactical RPGs currently available, The Dark Cave falls flat. Influenced by old-school aesthetics, its graphics, while basic, are not the main issue. The game’s mechanics, which limit movement and impose health penalties with every action, create an unbalanced and frustrating gameplay experience. Moreover, the absence of a compelling narrative and poor localization further detract from what could have been a nostalgic journey.

8 Forgotten Mines

There’s Goblins in Them Mines!

Most Disappointing Indie Games Forgotten Mines

Platform

PC

Publisher

Ishtar Games

Genre

Tactical RPG, rogue-like

Release Date

July 23, 2024

Promising engaging gameplay with a narrative centered around dwarven vengeance, Forgotten Mines ultimately suffers from significant balance issues. Players lead a team through perilous levels, yet the lack of healing mechanisms between floors creates a punishing atmosphere where even minor mistakes can lead to untimely deaths. After hours of effort, unlocking upgrades feels more punitive than rewarding, calling for a re-evaluation of its mechanics for a better future installation.

7 Spirit Mancer

Beautiful Bimbo

Most Disappointing Indie Games Spirit Mancer

Desiring the fusion of platforming and deck-building, I approached Spirit Mancer with high hopes. Featuring a vivid art style and magical themes, the game’s premise is intriguing. However, the execution falters due to a lack of coherence. The platforming is lackluster, and the deck-building element feels nearly non-existent, leading to a tedious gameplay experience.

6 Magical Delicacy

Not Magically Delicious

Most Disappointing Indie Games Magical Delicacy

Magical Delicacy enters the gaming scene as a visually stunning blend of cooking simulation and Metroidvania genres. While the cooking aspects hold some potential, the gameplay lacks depth as the Metroidvania elements fail to integrate successfully. The absence of combat and a clunky user interface further detract from the overall experience. Although full of appealing ingredients, the game lacks the cohesion needed to provide a satisfying dish.

5 Broken Roads

Australian Apocalypse Now

Most Disappointing Indie Games Broken Roads

Broken Roads presents an appealing concept of post-apocalyptic survival in Australia, yet it emerges as a laborious experience. The game is over-complicated, with convoluted systems that are hard to grasp. Moreover, dialogue options lack emotional depth, leaving players detached from characters. Combat feels uninspired, resembling outdated tabletop RPG mechanics rather than delivering a captivating gaming narrative.

4 Mars 2120

Red Planet, Dead Planet

Most Disappointing Indie Games Mars 2120

Platform

PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

Publisher

QUByte Interactive

Genre

Metroidvania

Release Date

August 1, 2024

While many Brazilian developments have won acclaim, Mars 2120 regrettably does not join their ranks. The game crumbles under poor gameplay mechanics, despite its visually pleasing aesthetics. As players attempt to navigate the red planet, they encounter frustrating platforming and exhausting combat sequences, resulting in a lackluster exploratory experience.

3 Elsie

Mega Man It’s Not

Most Disappointing Indie Games Elsie

Platform

PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S

Publisher

Playtonic Games

Genre

Platformer, Rogue-like

Release Date

September 10, 2024

Despite expectations following the legacy of inspiring titles like Mega Man, Elsie disappointingly misses the mark. Burdened by cumbersome mechanics and overwhelming gameplay, it fails to engage players as one would expect from a quality platformer. The flashy presentation cannot compensate for the dull and disjointed experience that leaves much to be desired.

2 PuzzMiX

A Puzzling Disaster

Most Disappointing Indie Games PuzzMiX

Platform

PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

Publisher

Inti Creates

Genre

Puzzle

Release Date

April 5, 2024

As a fan of Inti Creates, it’s disappointing to report that PuzzMiX falls short of expectations. The game centers on simplistic matching mechanics that lack depth or variety. With only one level available and minimal incentives to replay, this title fails to capture the essence of engaging puzzle design synonymous with the developer’s hallmark.

1 Umbraclaw

Unlucky Black Cat

Most Disappointing Indies Umbraclaw

This final entry is a bittersweet one. Coming from a reputable developer like Inti Creates, I had high hopes for Umbraclaw. Centered around a black cat’s journey to escape the Soulplane, the game offers beautiful visuals and innovative mechanics.

However, the overall experience proves to be tedious. A lack of balance in gameplay and an overwhelming resource requirement to upgrade skills detract from the potential enjoyment. Despite the appealing premise, Umbraclaw‘s execution leads it to be more of a chore than a captivating adventure.

In conclusion, while these indie games showcased interesting concepts and artistic visions, their execution fell short. Developers are encouraged to refine their mechanics and narratives to better align with player expectations, ensuring future titles can truly captivate and delight.
