If you’re diving into the captivating world of Monster Train 2, you’re sure to encounter a vast array of cards to enhance your deck-building experience. This title, which elegantly blends tower defense with deck management, is not necessarily tailored for newcomers, so insightful guidance can be beneficial when determining which cards to prioritize during your runs.
In Monster Train 2, the cards come in diverse categories. They range from spells targeting both your allies and foes, to powerful equipment that can empower your most cherished characters, as well as status effects influencing entire floors of your train. The selection is rich and varied, providing ample opportunity for strategic play.
After dedicating countless hours to mastering this engaging hybrid game, I’ve compiled a list of ten essential cards worth pursuing, especially if you’re finding your initial playthroughs challenging.
While your success with these cards may depend on your individual playstyle and deck synergy, many of these cards are universally effective, regardless of your specific approach to gameplay. So, prepare yourself as we depart on this exciting journey!
This compilation will not cover unit or character cards; for insights on the most effective early-game units, check the accompanying article linked herein.
10 Hellfurnace
Could Be A Pilot Light Issue

If you’re crafting a Pyre-gel focused build—similar to the Poison/Burn mechanics found in many deckbuilders—Hellfurnace is an invaluable asset. For fans of applying damaging status effects en masse, this card fits seamlessly into your strategy.
As a Room card, Hellfurnace impacts every enemy in the chosen train compartment. Each application of Pyre-gel to an enemy, whether through direct attacks or other synergies, adds an astounding +3 stacks of Pyre-gel on all enemies for the fight’s duration. This ability makes it ideal for stacking Pyre-gel rapidly.
9 Cleave
Remember To Dismember

Cleave provides a straightforward method for dealing significant damage. Although it isn’t a perpetual room card, it influences every enemy on the same floor when played.
Utilizing Cleave means that all opponents in front of your central unit receive damage equal to that unit’s attack power. For example, when stationed with Fel, the Banished clan Champion, buffing her with extra Valor can turn Cleave into a devastating strike that dishes out 100+ damage to all enemies lined up against her.
8 Selfless Sacrifice
Take One For The Team

To balance your offensive strategies, consider Selfless Sacrifice, a pivotal defensive card. It’s crucial to maintain a balanced approach in your deck.
This card allows any select backline unit to shift to the front, absorbing two lethal hits thanks to a +2 Damage Shield buff. However, it carries a Consume effect, meaning its use is limited to a single instance per battle. Employ this card judiciously—only when necessary.
7 Liquid Courage
Chug, Chug, Chug

Another useful defensive card with a Consume trait, Liquid Courage not only fortifies your defense but also enhances your attack in dire circumstances.
This card provides your selected unit with a shield against one incoming attack while simultaneously granting +4 Valor. Valor boosts both attack power and armor, making Liquid Courage a versatile tool during critical moments.
With only a single ember point required to cast, it also offers a competitive edge over Selfless Sacrifice. Cheers!
6 Dragon’s Breath
May I Suggest A Lozenge?

Pyrgel applications are fundamental during the early phases of your Monster Train 2 adventure, and Dragon’s Breath exemplifies this approach. Although it does require a staggering 3 ember points, deploying it at the right time yields tremendous results.
This powerful card applies to every enemy on the same floor, stacking +10 Pyre-gel while dealing an additional 10 damage. This combo can easily eliminate numerous weaker foes swiftly, and even against more durable adversaries, any double-digit Pyre-gel accumulation is highly beneficial.
5 Bloodsoaked Arena
Malice At The Palace

As another Room card, Bloodsoaked Arena impacts an entire floor throughout the battle, making it a standout choice among early-game Room cards.
Each Valor stack gained by your units on this floor enhances their offensive and defensive capabilities considerably. Bloodsoaked Arena grants +6 to all friendly units upon each enemy kill, transforming even your less powerful units into formidable attackers.
Duplicating this card across multiple copies will amplify its effect throughout the entire train, amplifying its worth even further.
4 Penitent’s Bloodsuit
Dry Clean Only

This concludes our Equipment card spotlight, featuring a unique twist. Most Equipment cards are allocated to your own units, but some, like Penitent’s Bloodsuit, inflict damage on your enemies instead.
When placed on an enemy, this card deals 30 damage whenever that enemy moves within the train. Since bosses in Monster Train 2 routinely shift between floors each turn, applying this card right off the bat can significantly weaken them throughout the battle.
3 Deadly Plunge
Do Not Open Before Boss Fight

Deadly Plunge is another crucial card with a single-use feature, but its power should not be underestimated—especially as your units become well-equipped and fortified later in your run.
When combined with your unit’s upgrades, shields, and Valor bonuses, Deadly Plunge can feasibly unleash over 200 damage in a single strike, making it essential for decimating tougher foes or substantially damaging bosses.
2 Mind Cage
Despite All My Rage

A little secret for you—I enjoy honing unit abilities in Monster Train 2. These specialized powers held by select units are often linked to cooldown timers, necessitating patience, which isn’t one of my virtues.
Fel’s Savior ability, granting her an impressive +5 boost to both Valor and Shield with each use, shines in this context. Combined with her multistrike ability, Fel becomes a powerhouse as long as you continue to stack Valor.
Equipping Fel with the Mind Cage card reduces her cooldown, allowing for near-constant usage of her ability. This not only maximizes her potential but makes for an exhilarating gameplay experience.
1 Benediction
#blessed

Throughout this guide, I’ve frequently highlighted the significance of Valor and Damage Shield. As such, any card that bolsters these attributes earns a prime spot in my strategy.Benediction influences both.
Moreover, it enhances both buffs for every unit on the same floor, making it truly versatile. While some cards with similar effects may carry a Consume modifier, restricting their usage, Benediction does not hold that limitation.
Though it requires three ember points to play, the wealth of cumulative benefits from Benediction justifies the cost. Absorb significant damage, amplify offensive output, and enhance shielding—all applied across an entire floor. Absolutely indispensable!
