“Took him down 3-4 times and actually won the fight” – Eddie Alvarez explains why Georges St-Pierre would have beaten Khabib Nurmagomedov

According to Eddie Alvarez, Georges St-Pierre would have emerged victorious against Khabib Nurmagomedov in a hypothetical match, as recently explained.

Despite the speculation surrounding a potential comeback for a super-fight against St-Pierre following Nurmagomedov’s retirement in October 2020, the highly anticipated matchup never came to fruition.

Despite never happening, the potential matchup between these two legendary fighters continues to captivate MMA fans as one of the most intriguing “what-if”scenarios in the sport’s history. Both competitors are highly revered and their potential clash in the octagon leaves fans wondering about the potential outcome.

During his appearance on the Pound 4 Pound podcast, the former two-division UFC champion expressed confidence that if the hypothetical fight had taken place prior to 2020, he would have been able to hand ‘The Eagle’ his first loss in MMA.

“I think Khabib could have beat me, and I’m not saying I could have beat Khabib all the time. I was confident enough to take that fight that I was thinking that if I take that fight, I’m going to beat him that day at that particular place, but that doesn’t mean I will beat him all the time. But I was confident, maybe I’m wrong.”

He further stated:

“I think I would have beat him because if he would have come to put pressure on me, I would have put him down. I would have had the confidence to try to go for it.”

Alvarez has recently posted a response to St-Pierre’s comments on the podcast’s Instagram page. The former lightweight champion confidently stated that Nurmagomedov would have been no match for ‘Rush’ due to his superior skills.

“Gleason [Tibau] took him down 3-4 times and actually won the fight, so Georges wouldn’t have been the first. In their primes, Georges wins… GSP fan for life.”

Despite securing a unanimous decision victory over Tibau at UFC 148 in July 2012, Nurmagomedov’s win was met with controversy. Numerous fans argued that the Brazilian, who executed more takedowns and seemed to control the striking exchanges, should have been declared the rightful winner.

Despite successfully pinning Tibau against the cage for a significant amount of time, ‘The Eagle’ was unable to take advantage of this position with effective offensive tactics and was unable to execute any takedowns of his own.

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s reaction to Georges St-Pierre’s hypothetical fight comment

In response to Georges St-Pierre’s claim that he would come out as the winner if they were to ever compete in the octagon, Khabib Nurmagomedov has shared his thoughts.

‘The Eagle’ wrote on his Instagram account (according to ESPN MMA):

“I learn from this guy a lot. Even hear he talk about me is so interesting. GSP all day.”
