The U.S. version of The Summit debuted on September 29 on CBS. Sixteen contestants are competing in this thrilling survival competition for a chance to win a share of the $1 million prize. The adventure kicks off at Lake Wakatipu near Glenorchy, and the participants have 14 days to reach the pinnacle of the Southern Alps in New Zealand.
The $1 million prize is to be distributed among the 16 contestants, each required to carry a portion of the prize money to the mountain’s summit. Should a contestant be eliminated for medical reasons, or if someone chooses to withdraw, the money they were carrying will be deducted from the total prize pool.
In the very first episode, two contestants were eliminated, including Tony Reyes, who was taken out due to medical issues. The Austin marathon runner collapsed just hours into the trek, necessitating his removal from the competition.
In an interview with Give Me My Remote following the premiere, showrunner Kevin Lee addressed Reyes’ situation and provided insight into the reasons behind his collapse. Lee speculated that Reyes may have suffered from dehydration and lacked sufficient electrolytes to continue the challenging trek. He stated:
“I do think what happened was he hadn’t drank enough water; he didn’t have enough electrolytes, and it just kind of got him.”
Showrunner Kevin Lee Discusses Tony Reyes and His Episode 1 Elimination
Tony Reyes was the first contestant eliminated from The Summit in episode one. Within the initial five hours of the group’s trek, the marathon runner suddenly stopped and collapsed. After his fall, he was quickly surrounded by producers and medical personnel.
Despite his insistence that he was fine and could continue after a brief rest, Reyes was ultimately removed from the show for his safety. Consequently, the share of the prize money he was carrying was also eliminated from the competition.
The reality series introduced Reyes’ compelling backstory during the premiere. At 36, he is a media director from Austin, Texas, who once weighed over 400 pounds. Following the birth of his son, he decided to lose weight for his health and to witness his child’s growth.
Reyes achieved an impressive weight loss of over 140 pounds and took up marathon running to embrace his new lifestyle.
Showrunner Kevin Lee expressed his dismay at Reyes’ elimination, noting that he had formed a friendship with him during the casting process. All contestants, including Reyes, underwent medical evaluations to qualify for the show.
Lee elaborated on Reyes’ journey as a marathon runner, explaining how The Summit was “an important part of his emotional life.” It was a heartbreaking moment for the showrunner to witness Reyes’ collapse. He stated:
“At first I thought he was having a heart attack or something. I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what the hell? Did all of our processes fail?’ Luckily, we found out that, no, he just collapsed from exhaustion, and he was completely fine. Even hours later, he was completely fine, but we didn’t know that at the time, so it was really scary.”
Later that day, the contestant expressed a desire to return to the show, requesting that Lee bring him back. Although Lee does not have the sole authority to make such decisions, he indicated he would consult with his team on Reyes’ potential return. He remarked:
“I’m only one of many decision-makers, but if they listen to me, I would love to bring him back, because he’s such a rootable guy,”
