- Despite uncertainty, Hiddleston has expressed openness to reprising his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
With the anticipation surrounding two new Avengers films, speculation regarding returning cast members has intensified. Tom Hiddleston, known for his remarkable portrayal of Loki, has been the subject of much curiosity about whether he will reprise the role in upcoming installments of the MCU. His recent comments on this topic were notably non-committal, leaving fans pondering his future involvement.
Hiddleston made his first appearance as Loki, the trickster god and brother of Thor, in the 2011 film Thor. He has since depicted the character in multiple films, including The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).A significant moment in Endgame involved Loki escaping with the Tesseract, which laid the groundwork for the critically acclaimed Disney+ series Loki, also starring Hiddleston. Although the series enjoyed a successful two-season run, fans are left longing for more Loki-centric content, particularly regarding his potential cameo in future Avengers films.
During a recent interaction captured in a video on X (formerly Twitter), Hiddleston encountered fans and signed autographs. When asked if he would return for Doomsday or Secret Wars, he replied, “I don’t know, ”while shaking his head. This vague response has fueled speculation among fans who suspect that he might be concealing his knowledge of impending projects, in line with Marvel’s tradition of keeping a tight lid on casting news and plot details.
We know that even if Tom is in the movie, he would never talk about it, if there’s one thing he knows how to keep well, it’s a secret.😉 — Best of Tom Hiddleston (@bestoftwh) February 26, 2025
Hiddleston’s connection to the MCU has spanned over ten years, making his character beloved among fans. Following the conclusion of Loki Season 2, he expressed satisfaction with the character’s journey, stating he wrote “thank you notes” to colleagues at Marvel Studios, reflecting his gratitude and emotional connection to the project. Hiddleston reiterated his willingness to keep the door open for future roles within the MCU, saying in an interview with The Wrap in November 2023:
“So I think at this point, I keep an open heart and an open mind. I’m really pleased with where we landed—it feels significant and profound and correct. But time will tell, I suppose.”
As a pivotal figure in the MCU, Hiddleston’s portrayal of Loki resonates strongly with fans, who hope to see him return to the big screen. Given the ongoing multiverse arc, his character could play a crucial role in upcoming films. Notably, the upcoming Doomsday and Secret Wars movies are designed to delve into multiverse themes, which creates ample opportunity for Hiddleston’s return. MCU has successfully reeled back prominent stars like Robert Downey Jr.and Chris Evans, so it’s conceivable they could do the same for Hiddleston if they wish.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to premiere on May 7, 2027.
