Renowned country music singer, songwriter, and actor Kris Kristofferson has sadly passed away at the age of 88 on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at his residence in Maui, Hawaii. The specific cause of death remains undisclosed. According to reports, the legendary singer departed peacefully, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Kris is survived by his wife, Lisa, along with eight children and seven grandchildren. He had three children from previous marriages to Frances Beer and Rita Coolidge, in addition to five children with Lisa. In a heartfelt Instagram post, his family shared the news of his passing alongside a statement to Variety.

In the statement, they expressed that Kris Kristofferson had “passed away peacefully”and remarked that they felt “blessed for their time with him.”The family extended their gratitude to his fans for “loving him all these many years.”

“Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all,” his family stated.

In 2003, Kris Kristofferson was reportedly involved in a political altercation with fellow country musician Toby Keith during Willie Nelson’s 70th birthday concert. The incident had been brought to light by actor Ethan Hawke in a 2009 tribute article he wrote for Rolling Stone.

The alleged incident occurred backstage when Toby Keith allegedly confronted Kris, following the rising popularity of his 2002 song “Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue (The Angry American),”which was a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Ethan Hawke’s tribute article titled The Last Outlaw: Kris Kristofferson’s American Journey discussed a supposed confrontation involving Kris and Toby at Willie Nelson’s birthday celebration. In the article, Hawke alluded to a well-known country artist without naming him explicitly but described a star with a significant hit regarding military actions.

Reportedly, the unnamed artist, believed to be Toby Keith, approached Kris backstage and admonished him, saying, “None of that lefty sh*t out there tonight, Kris.” To this, Kris allegedly responded, “What the f*ck did you just say to me?” When Toby retorted, “You heard me,” and started to walk away, Kris reportedly shot back, “Don’t turn your back to me, boy.”

Toby, as per the account, expressed his desire to avoid conflict, asking Kris to “tone it down.” Kris, a retired Army Ranger and helicopter pilot, retaliated by questioning Toby’s military service, remarking, “You ever worn your country’s uniform? Don’t ‘What?’ me, boy! You heard the question. You just don’t like the answer. Have you ever served your country? The answer is, no, you have not. Have you ever killed another man? Have you ever taken another man’s life and then cashed the check your country gave you for doing it? No, you have not. So shut the f*ck up… you don’t know what the h*ll you’re talking about.”

Kris Kristofferson went on to mention that Waylon Jennings criticized contemporary artists like Toby Keith for damaging country music, humorously comparing it to “what pantyhose did to finger f*cking.” Following Ethan Hawke’s article, which sparked considerable attention, Toby Keith addressed the matter at the 2009 Academy of Country Music Awards, denouncing the Rolling Stone piece as “superficial” and a “fictitious f*cking lie.” He claimed that Hawke deliberately omitted his name to avoid repercussions.

Kris later released a statement stating that he enjoyed a friendship with both Ethan Hawke and Toby Keith. However, he clarified that he did not recall the alleged events of Willie Nelson’s birthday, saying, “What does it matter? That was six years ago. I spoke to Ethan before I put out my statement and thanked him for the beautiful story he wrote for Rolling Stone and I also told him I did not recall the incident at Willie’s birthday party. This is the last statement I will put out about this nonsense.”
