His mentor, Jigoro, intervened to settle a significant debt incurred by Zenitsu—a debt born out of betrayal—paving the way for him to train under the former Thunder Hashira.
Zenitsu’s anxieties severely hindered his progress as a demon slayer. Although he possesses impressive Thunder Breathing techniques and remarkable physical prowess, his mindset had consistently acted as a barrier to his potential. His reputation among fans often casts him as the fearful warrior, fleeing or fainting in the face of danger. Yet, when he taps into his abilities, he demonstrates exceptional skill, having dispatched formidable enemies such as the Tongue Demon and the Spider Demon Son.

Zenitsu’s constant state of fear was once his greatest hindrance, but an extraordinary personal tragedy catalyzed a monumental shift in his character. Following the suicide of his beloved mentor, Jigoro, who succumbed to the shame of a former student’s betrayal, Zenitsu received the devastating news that would catalyze his transformation. This loss ignited a fierce desire for vengeance, eliminating his pervasive cowardice.
The emotional stakes surrounding Zenitsu’s battle with Kaigaku are palpable. From the moment he learned of Jigoro’s death, he adopted a relentless seriousness that surprised even his closest allies, prompting concern among them. This evolution marks a pivotal moment that showcases Zenitsu’s depth beyond mere comic relief, as he prepared to confront the formidable Kaigaku—an Upper Rank demon—with unwavering resolve and focus.

It starkly contrasts the earlier portrayal of Zenitsu as a timid boy. This confrontation epitomizes the zenith of Zenitsu’s character development, illustrating how his desire to protect others can surmount even his deepest fears.
Visually breathtaking, this battle showcases Zenitsu’s most impressive implementation of Thunder Breathing, including the revelation of a new seventh form. Although the encounter is relatively quick, it’s enhanced by Zenitsu’s overwhelming strength and mastery of the breathing technique, culminating in a breathtaking moment where he decapitates Kaigaku—an unforgettable panel from the manga.

Finally Conquering His Timidity
Zenitsu’s victory over Kaigaku without any assistance adds to the battle’s magnificence. Unlike many other Infinity Castle confrontations, which typically involve several demon slayers battling in tandem, Zenitsu faced Kaigaku alone, remaining resolute in his approach and keeping his intentions to himself. When Tanjiro implored him to share his burden, Zenitsu simply replied, “this is one thing I have to do, no matter what,” highlighting his commitment to his duty.
Zenitsu’s awe-inspiring execution of Thunder Breathing during the battle is certainly noteworthy; however, it is his resolute bravery in the absence of fear that profoundly impacted me. This duel is a defining point in Zenitsu’s character arc, allowing him to fulfill his potential and rise to near Hashira-level prowess in an instant. Among all battles in the Demon Slayer Infinity Castle arc, his duel against Kaigaku resonates the most—serving as a moment for Zenitsu to cement his identity as a true hero.
