The Gnoster Boss Encounter in Elden Ring: Nightreign’s Sentient Pest presents an unexpected difficulty for unprepared players. Gnoster, comprising both a moth and a scorpion, employs a few predictable attacks that remain consistent throughout the fight, albeit with increased speed as the battle progresses. In the latter half, the two forms combine their efforts, ramping up their speed and agility, making it challenging for melee fighters to find windows for attack.

To better prepare, we detail the attacks based on each form: the moth and the scorpion.

Moth Attacks

The moth specializes in arrows of poison and magical assaults, making it advisable to acquire buffs that mitigate magical damage during your journey.

  • Glintstone Stars: This attack resembles the iconic sorcery but is unique to Gnoster. Tiny brilliant stars are launched upwards, only to return as projectiles. Expect a quicker barrage in the second half of the fight.
    • Dodge to the side or move forward to avoid these incoming stars.
  • Beam of Light: This ability unleashes a massive beam from above, indicated by a white light disc on the ground. Players have about two seconds to evade before impact, which can be fatal.
    • Either sprint or dodge away swiftly to avoid being struck.
  • Poison Cloud: A noxious green mist is released, expanding outward in a wide arc.
    • Step back promptly to escape its range, and listen for a bell sound that indicates its impending use.

Scorpion Attacks

The scorpion presents its own set of challenges, including an ability that grants temporary invulnerability.

  • Stone Blades: The scorpion will slam its claws into the ground, causing a barrage of stone blades to rise.
    • Ranged characters can mostly avoid this threat, but melee fighters must master timely dodging or retreating to avoid damage.
  • Claw Smash: A powerful downward strike from one or both claws.
    • Rely on dodging to the side or toward the enemy to evade this attack.
  • Scorpion Ram: In the latter half of the fight, the scorpion dramatically increases its speed and will charge forward.
    • Sidestep to evade this aggressive move.
  • Stone Bug: The scorpion becomes invulnerable by transforming into stone in the first phase.
    • Focus your attacks on the moth or wait for this phase to conclude.

Identifying Gnoster’s Vulnerabilities

One notable weakness of the Sentient Pest is fire. While this is clear from the boss selection screen, players have also observed effective results against Gnoster utilizing blood loss and frostbite effects. Fire-based weapons are relatively accessible throughout Limveld, making it a straightforward weakness to exploit. Additionally, equipping the Night of the Beast relic enhances your starting weapon with fire affinity, which, when combined with two upgrades using smithing stones, provides a substantial advantage in battle.

Optimal Party Compositions for Defeating Gnoster

To simplify the Gnoster encounter, having at least two ranged characters is highly advantageous. Melee players often struggle to deal with the moth effectively and face greater risks from the scorpion’s attacks. With two ranged teammates, you can ensure consistent damage output, while a melee character can attempt to flank or distract Gnoster as opportunities arise.

From our experience, effective melee fighters in this context include:

  • Duchess
  • Raider
  • Wylder

Characters like Guardian may find it difficult to keep pace, and without multiple buffs for stamina and poise, cannot absorb Gnoster’s damage effectively. Similarly, Revenant sometimes lacks the utility you need, as Gnoster can dispatch their spirit summons with ease.

Forming a team with two Ironeyes alongside either Wylder or Duchess creates a nimble group capable of dealing significant damage while maintaining distance from threats. Wylder stands out slightly over Duchess because of their skill, enhancing mobility. Recluse can also serve as a valuable third or substitute for one Ironeye, but their effectiveness largely hinges on your available range of elemental weapons.
