Despite a valiant effort, Tim Tszyu’s pursuit of becoming the undisputed champion came to an end this past weekend after a grueling battle with Sebastian Fundora.
Despite being predicted to earn a historic sum of money, the Australian fell just short in a split decision after a grueling 12 rounds. Tszyu’s original opponent, Keith Thurman, had to withdraw due to an injury, causing Tszyu to make adjustments. Fundora, who filled in as a last-minute replacement, brought with him an unbeaten record and an unrelenting fighting approach.
The highly anticipated fight delivered on all expectations, as both fighters exchanged powerful punches throughout. ‘The Soul Taker’ displayed strong aggression in the beginning but unfortunately sustained a gruesome head injury in the second round.
Despite facing blurred vision from the cut, Tszyu refused to give up and continued to target Fundora’s body with consistent success. Meanwhile, Fundora capitalized on his reach advantage in the later rounds, using jabs and uppercuts to pepper Tszyu.
In the end, Fundora’s activity and dominance with his jabs were preferred by the judges, resulting in them awarding him the vacant WBC title and dethroning Tszyu as the WBO champion.
