Tim Cain Returns to Obsidian Entertainment as Full-Time Developer

Obsidian Entertainment has welcomed back Tim Cain, the celebrated designer and programmer renowned for creating the iconic Fallout series. Cain, who played a pivotal role in developing the post-apocalyptic RPG during the heyday of Interplay Entertainment, has returned to a full-time position after spending a few years in semi-retirement from the gaming industry.

Cain shared this exciting news through a video on his YouTube channel, where he discussed his recent move to Southern California to join Obsidian’s team in person.

A Legacy of Game Development

Beyond his foundational work on Fallout, which he first released in 1997, Cain also designed Fallout 2 in 1998. His commitment to game design continued with titles such as Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. Cain’s journey with Obsidian Entertainment began in 2011, where he contributed to critically acclaimed titles including Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, and The Outer Worlds, serving in various capacities, including director.

Since his initial stint at Obsidian, Cain has engaged as a contractor with various studios, even serving as a creative consultant for the highly anticipated The Outer Worlds 2.

New Beginnings and a Secret Project

With Cain’s return, speculation arises regarding his new project at Obsidian. However, he has cautioned fans against making assumptions, particularly regarding a possible new Fallout title.“I can’t talk about the project that I’m working on at Obsidian, just because that’s covered by NDA, ” Cain stated.“Don’t bother guessing; you’re not going to guess right.”

Obsidian’s Busy Year Ahead

This year has already proven to be bustling for Obsidian, which, now operating under Microsoft, has launched three games: the RPGs Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, in addition to the cooperative survival title Grounded 2. While fans eagerly await announcements for upcoming projects in 2026 and beyond, details about Cain’s project remain under wraps, leaving much to the imagination.

As Tim Cain steps back into the game development spotlight, the industry watches closely for what innovative direction he will bring to Obsidian Entertainment.
