TikTok duo Matt and Abby Howard have sparked curiosity and confusion among their audience with a surprising revelation from Matt: he has been sleeping on the floor of their closet for the past month.
Known for their engaging content on the popular TikTok channel Matt & Abby, the couple shares their journey as young parents and hosts a podcast called Unplanned. Despite their popularity, they often find themselves at the center of controversies. Their advocacy for a “traditional”relationship model raises eyebrows, particularly as the responsibilities within their household predominantly fall on Abby, despite Matt’s equal professional commitments. One notable incident involved Matt filming a so-called “surprise”for Abby, where he cleaned their home and candidly admitted, “Don’t be fooled by me picking up my house because I’m not typically the one that does it. And don’t be fooled by me taking care of my son because most of the time, my wife does that, too.”
Another significant controversy arose when Matt released a song expressing feelings of inadequacy within his family. While it was a heartfelt expression of his mental health challenges, it raised concerns about whether airing such personal struggles publicly might harm Abby emotionally, particularly when he openly shared details of their living conditions.
Matt Howard’s Unconventional Sleeping Arrangement
The concept of “sleep divorce, ”where couples opt to sleep separately for various reasons, is not unheard of. Factors like snoring or the need for personal space often dictate this choice. However, few couples take the step of openly discussing their unconventional sleeping arrangements online, let alone opting to sleep on a closet floor. Yet, Matt has done both, making his situation all the more puzzling.
Recently, Matt announced he was launching his own podcast, paired with a TikTok account titled Matt Howard Show. His initial video stunned viewers; lying on a mattress on the closet floor, he confessed, “This is super embarrassing, but I’ve been sleeping in our walk-in closet for the past month.” Although he disclosed that they have a spare bedroom available, he opted to drag the mattress into the closet to prioritize his mental health, despite Abby’s clear disapproval.

Despite the viral reaction, Matt did not clarify how sleeping on a closet floor benefits his mental well-being. In a subsequent video, he briefly discusses his ADHD while still positioned on his makeshift bed. Viewers expressed confusion over his choice of sleeping location, wondering why he chose the closet when there are other viable spaces in their home. More crucially, it raises the question of whether the arrangement was mutually agreed upon. While “sleep divorce” can be beneficial for couples experiencing sleep disturbances, it requires collaboration, not unilateral decisions.
The thought of Abby navigating her day while having to step over Matt’s mattress to access her clothing raises speculation about the intention behind showcasing this arrangement on social media. Did he obtain her consent before sharing such an intimate detail of their lives with millions? It’s unclear.
While Matt has been candid about his mental health issues, his approach raises questions about effective management strategies. Techniques such as therapy, couples counseling, or confiding in a trusted friend could provide healthier outlets for addressing mental health challenges than publicly announcing discontent through music or social media videos. If personal solutions create potential embarrassment for one’s partner, it may indicate a need for more constructive coping methods.
