“This Really Feels More Like Marketing” — Internet Responds to Billie Eilish’s Google Collaboration for Sustainable Fan Options During Upcoming Tour

Pop singer Billie Eilish has partnered with Google Maps for her upcoming Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour, aiming to assist her fans in making sustainable travel choices to her concerts. According to a Yahoo! Tech article published on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, the artist expressed in a statement:

“I am so excited to see you all at my shows over the coming months, and for us to work together in reducing our collective footprint when it comes to transportation and what we eat. Every action matters, no matter how big or small, and together we can truly begin to heal our beautiful planet.”

As the announcement of Billie Eilish’s collaboration with Google Maps circulated, many internet users shared their reactions. Some perceived it as a marketing strategy, with comments such as:

Critics also labeled the Bellyache singer as a hypocrite. Here are a few remarks observed on X:

“Sustainability this, sustainability that but she’d be the first person to drop 28639330 physical variants of her album. Even if it’s recycled there’s no point in putting out different variants of the SAME album. SHE IS THE BIGGEST HYPOCRITE,”@reputanush13 commented.

“shes still on this? girl hanging onto the clout for life,”another added.

“Lol, your fans will travel anyway creating a huge carbon footprint. What kind of hypocrisy is this? Why not do the concert online to reduce the footprint?”a user suggested.

However, many supporters defended Billie Eilish, praising her initiative and countering the negativity.

“She’s 22 years old, yet she understands the fact that millions of people die every year due to air pollution. Even though certain artists can’t do that,”@supergaywoman wrote.

“Twt dragging her for doing this is peak stupidity,”a fan commented.

“if you’re mad at this, you’re experiencing symptoms of jobless-itis,”another remarked.

Billie Eilish is set to launch her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour on Sunday, September 29, 2024, in Quebec City

Billie Eilish will kick off her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour on Sunday, September 29, 2024, in Quebec City. According to the Yahoo! Tech article, the singer stated:

“Thanks to Google Maps, everyone will have easy access to resources that will help you make great sustainable choices when you come to my shows. Thank you for caring. See you soon!”

Throughout the 43-city tour, Google Maps will provide tips for environmentally-friendly travel, including fuel-efficient routes and public transport alternatives. Additionally, Billie Eilish is highlighting vegan and vegetarian restaurants in ten major U.S. cities, such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, which fans can discover via Google Maps.

Furthermore, as part of the campaign, the traditional Google Maps icon (in the form of a man) will be replaced by Billie’s distinctive Blohsh logo. Whenever a fan explores various concert locations, the blue logo will appear.

This isn’t the first instance of the nine-time Grammy award-winning artist advocating for sustainability. Earlier in the year, Billie Eilish released an eco-friendly vinyl edition of her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. In an interview with Billboard, she expressed her frustration towards artists who release multiple denial formats just to drive sales, calling it “frustrating”and “wasteful.”She remarked:

“As we all know, it’s pretty impossible to force someone to care. All you can do is express and explain your beliefs, but a lot of people don’t really understand the severity of the climate crisis. And if they do, they’re like, ‘Well, what’s the point? We’re all going to die anyway.’”

Billie Eilish elaborated:

“Believe me, I feel that way too. But ‘what’s the point’ goes both ways: ‘What’s the point? I can do whatever I want. We’re all going to die anyway.’ Or, ‘What’s the point? I might as well do the right thing while I’m here.’ That’s my view.”

The acclaimed artist will tour the United States as part of her Hit Me Hard and Soft concert series through 2024, before heading to Australia in February 2025. The tour will conclude in Europe by late July.
