On September 28, 2024, BLACKPINK’s Lisa made history as the first female K-pop soloist to perform at the Global Citizen Music Festival, taking place in New York City’s Central Park. The event was live-streamed on Veeps starting at 4 PM (ET). During her performance, she showcased her upcoming unreleased track, Moonlit Floor, which is set for a global release on October 3, 2024.
The English song lyrics tell a story about a green-eyed French man under the moonlight in Paris. Although the music was pleasing, many netizens pointed out that the K-pop star allegedly lip-synced throughout her set.
Some viewers expressed their frustration, noting how she set her microphone down while the track continued to play in the background, highlighting the lip-syncing. One netizen on X (formerly Twitter) shared their thoughts:
“Is the mic necessary when you are just going to lipsync the whole performance? Like this is embarrassing”
Moreover, some users suggested that the lyrics of Moonlit Floor bear similarities to Kiss Me by Sixpence None The Richer. There were concerns about K-pop idols lip-syncing, especially given their extensive training to sing and dance live.
“The lyrics of her new song—another plagiarism content,”one person commented.
“Lisa performing at Global Citizen was a big mess, heavily off singing as well as obviously off lip-syncing. If she did the same at the Victoria’s Secret show it’s not going to be good for her career,”another fan remarked.
“K-pop artists lip-syncing after extensive training need to be studied. What was the point of your training boot camp?”another netizen questioned.
Nonetheless, many fans defended Lisa, insisting they enjoyed her performance regardless of the lip-syncing claims.
“Who cares? The music is still good; lip-syncing has been around for ages, get over it already,”one fan stated.
“Can y’all stop with this ‘she’s lip-syncing’?! I love artists who lip-sync; why are you mad? Just support someone who sings live and move on!”another fan added.
“Lisa should be the last person you accuse of lip-syncing, knowing how she proves her love for singing in every concert,”another supporter exclaimed.
Lisa’s Stylish Appearance at the 2024 Global Citizen Music Festival
This year has been particularly busy for the Thai performer, as she launched her company, LLOUD, on February 7, 2024, after departing from YG Entertainment in December 2024. In April, she entered into a partnership agreement between LLOUD and the American music label RCA Records.
For her debut at the 2024 Global Citizen Music Festival, Lisa chose a layered outfit that included a mesh bodysuit paired with a leather bralette, complemented by a bodice made of semi-sheer black, yellow, and nude fabric.
Prior to this event, on September 12, 2024, Lisa made her mark by becoming the first K-pop female soloist to win the “Best K-pop”category at the MTV Video Music Awards, also making history as the first K-pop soloist to perform at this prestigious ceremony.
The Global Citizen Festival aims to raise awareness about extreme poverty and climate change, highlighting issues related to food insecurity and environmental degradation. The festival featured a lineup of major artists, including Raye, BLACKPINK’s Lisa, Post Malone, Doja Cat, Jelly Roll, and Benson Boone.
Additionally, renowned figures such as Hugh Jackman, DJ Khaled, Rachel Brosnahan, Gayle King, Danai Gurira, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau attended and presented at the event.
