When it comes to optimizing your Windows system, built-in tools like Disk Cleanup and Storage Sense can help eliminate some junk files. However, these tools often don’t remove everything. Various temporary caches, unnecessary application logs, and remnants from uninstalled programs frequently linger on your system, taking up valuable disk space that could otherwise be utilized more effectively.
If you find that your hard drive continues to fill up even after using these basic cleanup methods, it may be time to explore BleachBit. This free utility dives deeper than Windows’ native tools, helping to uncover hidden junk and recover significant space. In my experience, BleachBit managed to clear an additional 11GB of unnecessary files from my system after using Disk Cleanup. For instance, while Windows Disk Cleanup may overlook specific browser caches and logs, BleachBit can accurately locate and clean up data stored by applications like Firefox, Chrome, and VLC without disrupting their functionality.
The user interface is straightforward and user-friendly, offering three primary options: Preview, Clean, and Abort. The main menu allows easy access to file shredding options and configurable preferences. Each cleaning option is clearly labeled and accompanied by warning notices to inform users of potential risks, making it easy to choose the appropriate action.

Although BleachBit effectively uncovers unnecessary files, double-check that it has not flagged critical items.
Besides standard items like the Recycle Bin and temporary files, BleachBit efficiently cleans various files that may be overlooked by built-in options, such as Windows Defender logs and broken desktop shortcuts.
Although BleachBit includes major apps, it may not cover everything. If you wish to extend its functionalities, consider incorporating the winapp2.ini add-on from GitHub, which adds thousands of additional cleaners for different applications, allowing BleachBit to target a broader spectrum of junk files.

When you remove a file through standard Windows methods, the data isn’t entirely erased; rather, it marks the space for new data. As a result, recovery tools can often retrieve these files. BleachBit’s shredding feature safeguards against this by overwriting deleted files multiple times, rendering them irretrievable—even by advanced forensic methods.
Users can shred specific files, entire folders, or even wipe free space across the entire drive. The latter option is particularly useful for ensuring that remnants of previously deleted files are fully obliterated. Depending on the storage size, this process could take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, but it is the only guaranteed way to ensure that sensitive data has been removed completely.
BleachBit offers various shredding methods, including a quick single overwrite and more thorough options with multiple passes of random data. For the majority of use cases, a single pass is usually sufficient on modern drives. However, for older magnetic drives or for situations necessitating maximum security, multiple passes may be warranted.
Furthermore, BleachBit seamlessly integrates with the Windows Explorer context menu. By right-clicking any file or folder, you can shred it directly, simplifying the process of securely erasing confidential documents in your daily routine.
