“They haven’t asked me yet”: Sam Raimi hopes to work with Marvel again with Avengers: Secret Wars

Following the triumph of 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Sam Raimi has expressed his desire to direct the upcoming MCU film, Avengers: Secret Wars. The renowned director, known for his work on the original Spider-Man trilogy in the 2000s, has shown keen interest in this superhero project, set to release in 2027.

During an interview with Screen Geek, the director of Army of Darkness was questioned about his potential involvement in the upcoming Marvel film, following rumors of his participation. Raimi replied:

“I love 90% of the Marvel heroes that I’ve read in the great Stan Lee Marvel Universe comic books. I would love to work with Marvel again. They haven’t reasonably asked me to. I hope they had a good experience with me. They haven’t asked me yet. I hope they do.”

Sam Raimi attended WonderCon 2024 to promote Boy Kills World, for which he serves as producer.

Sam Raimi solidified his presence in pop culture and the superhero genre with his Spider-Man trilogy featuring Tobey Maguire. His reputation as the creator of the Evil Dead series was further enhanced when he introduced his own superhero, Darkman, in the 1990 film, which later became incorporated into the Marvel universe.

In 2022, Raimi was brought on board to direct the follow-up to Doctor Strange. The movie was a major hit, earning approximately $955 million at the box office. As a result, Raimi has a strong relationship with Marvel Studios and it would not be out of the question for him to helm Avengers: Secret Wars.

Rumors have recently surfaced about a possible fourth Spider-Man movie starring Tobey Maguire, after his appearance in the 2021 film No Way Home alongside Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland. This speculation comes from the fact that the original trilogy was intended to have more sequels, but director Sam Raimi withdrew due to conflicting schedules and artistic disagreements.

Despite initial reluctance, director Sam Raimi was willing to consider the possibility of a fourth installment of the Spider-Man franchise starring Tobey Maguire, following the introduction of the multiverse in the MCU. In a recent interview with MoviePilot in 2022, Raimi expressed his thoughts on the matter, stating:

“I didn’t think it was possible but after jumping back in with the multiverse I realized just like Doctor Strange does, anything is possible now. So I’m completely open to it.”

Despite rumors of a potential continuation of his Spider-Man trilogy, Marvel and Sony appear to have no current plans to make the movie. In an interview with CBR on April 2, Sam Raimi addressed these rumors.

“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet, I did read that, but, I’m actually not working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia [are] so successful with their current Spider-Man and the track there and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me and say ‘We could also tell that story!’ I’m not sure. But I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it.”

Raimi was also questioned about Maguire’s potential return to portray Peter Parker in the movie, to which he responded:

“I haven’t talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures. But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works. I think so. I don’t know.”

Despite no official announcements from the studios involved, fans have eagerly awaited a new installment of Raimi’s trilogy. Thomas Haden Church, known for his role as Sandman in Spider-Man 3 and reprising the character in No Way Home, added fuel to the rumors. In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, the actor stated:

“There’s been some rumors that they might ask me to do another Spider-Man, and I’d do it tomorrow… But, you know, I think Sam is gonna do another Spider-Man with Tobey [Maguire], and that’s the one that. .. They had an option for me to do Spiderman 4 when there was going to be a Spiderman 4. They had an option on me to come back. So if it happens, that would be fantastic.”

Despite lacking confirmation, there is a possibility for Raimi to collaborate with Marvel once again. As speculation of Spider-Man 4 and Avengers: Secret Wars continue, with no director currently attached, Raimi could potentially bring his talents to a new MCU project and create another captivating film.

Boy Kills World, the new film produced by Sam Raimi, will be released on April 26, 2024.
