The Witcher IV Will Match Wild Hunt in Size; Developers Prioritize Quality Over Quantity

Exciting Developments for The Witcher IV

Following the highly-anticipated trailer release during The Game Awards 2024, CD Projekt RED embarked on an extensive promotional tour for The Witcher IV. During a candid interview with Skill Up, Game Director Sebastian Kalemba shared insights about the game’s direction, which appears to align closely with that of its predecessor, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt.

Game Features and Gameplay Length

Kalemba began with a fascinating anecdote while discussing gameplay length. He recalled their initial estimations for the expansions of The Witcher III, where they anticipated about 5-10 hours for Hearts of Stone and 10-15 hours for Blood and Wine. Ultimately, these expansions delivered around 30 hours of content. With years of experience from creating The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, the team approaches scale differently now, prioritizing a rich gameplay experience rather than strictly adhering to predetermined metrics.

Regarding the size of the game, Kalemba confirmed that The Witcher IV will maintain a map comparable to its predecessor. The overall number of quests will also mirror that of The Witcher III, emphasizing the game’s ambitious scope. However, he reiterated their commitment to delivering a quality experience over sheer quantity. “We’re striving to create a super compelling gameplay experience,” he stated, suggesting that while the game will be significant, the exact dimensions in comparison to previous titles remain uncertain.

A Focus on Quality

For context, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt offers players a sprawling journey, taking over 50 hours to complete the main narrative and easily exceeding 100 hours when side content is included. Despite the expansive nature of this gameplay, Kalemba assured fans that quality is the utmost priority for the development team as they progress toward the release of The Witcher IV.

The Road Ahead

On a related note, Kalemba clarified that the reveal of the game and its new protagonist does not signify the start of a major marketing campaign. The game has entered full production earlier this year, indicating that players will likely have to wait a few years, if not longer, before the game is released. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as development progresses.
