The Witcher 4 Developers Address Speculation Regarding Ciri’s Face Changes

Overview

  • The Ciri model showcased in The Witcher 4 reveal trailer aligns with the one presented in the recent behind-the-scenes feature.
  • A representative from CD Projekt Red dismissed rumors about potential changes to Ciri’s model following negative feedback from the initial teaser.

The Witcher 4‘s reveal trailer prominently features the same Ciri model as outlined in an earlier behind-the-scenes video, according to a senior official at CD Projekt Red (CDPR).This statement was made in response to speculation among fans who believed that the character’s appearance had been altered since the first promotional materials were released.

Since its announcement nearly three years ago, anticipation for The Witcher 4 has been building. The cinematic reveal occurred during The Game Awards 2024 in December, confirming Ciri as the protagonist for this upcoming role-playing game. Some online communities expressed dissatisfaction regarding this version of Ciri, suggesting that her design deviates excessively from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

In February 2025, CDPR released a behind-the-scenes video that offered insights into the making of the reveal trailer. This time, the reception was significantly more favorable, with many fans commenting that the depicted Ciri model appeared more reminiscent of her portrayal in The Witcher 3. This led to speculation that her design had been adjusted in reaction to earlier criticism, but game director Sebastian Kalemba quickly refuted this theory.

Behind-the-Scenes Video Mirrors Reveal Trailer Model Without Modifications

In a tweet dated February 27, Kalemba clarified that the behind-the-scenes footage features the same Ciri model as the reveal trailer from TGA 2024. He noted that close-ups of Ciri at specific timestamps show her without enhancements like facial animations or lighting effects, attributing any perceived discrepancies to these cinematic techniques. This explanation aims to dispel any notions that the developers made adjustments to Ciri’s appearance following fan feedback about the initial presentations.

Ciri’s Look May Evolve by Launch

“This variation is a natural part of the game development process, ”Kalemba shared, highlighting that character models often change based on the medium used for presentation. CDPR has previously demonstrated this with the varying appearances of Geralt across cinematic trailers for its earlier titles. Consequently, it is likely that Ciri will also undergo alterations in her final appearance compared to her depiction in the first teaser for The Witcher 4.

The highly anticipated RPG transitioned to full development in November 2024, following a pre-production phase of approximately two and a half years. As a result, fans should not expect the game to be available before 2027. Notably, CDPR has recast the role of Ciri, now featuring Ciara Berkeley in place of Jo Wyatt.
