The Summit Premiere Recap: Mattie Eliminated as Medical Team Rushes to Evacuate Tony

The Summit made its exclusive debut on CBS on Sunday, September 29, 2024, airing from 8:30 to 10 p.m. PT. According to the official CBS website, The Summit is a thrilling reality TV competition series featuring 16 contestants who embark on a challenging 14-day expedition. Throughout this adventure, each participant’s mental and physical skills, along with their teamwork, are rigorously tested.

While climbing the stunning mountain in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, all players must collaborate effectively. Failure to reach their goal by the end of the 14th day means forfeiting the grand prize. The show structure emphasizes:

“Each contestant holds a portion of a $1 million prize, with only those who endure the treacherous terrain, extreme Antarctic winds, and formidable challenges able to claim it. Contestants face eliminations and unexpected twists from the ‘Mountain’s Keeper,’ which challenge their determination and togetherness. Their biggest obstacle is maintaining unity to reach the summit on time—any delays result in losing the entire prize.”

In Episode 1, viewers were introduced to the determined cast members competing for the grand prize. However, the prize was reduced to $937,500 after contestant Tony Reyes fainted and had to be medically evacuated. Subsequently, when the contestants reached the campsite, Mattie was voted out, claiming the decision was unfair.

What occurred in The Summit season 1 premiere episode?

During the premiere episode of The Summit season 1, contestant Beckylee Rawls took charge of the initial challenge, where all participants had to balance themselves while traversing a rope bridge. The 29-year-old construction worker from San Diego partnered with Rose Mattie, an army veteran from Arizona.

The Mountain Keeper presented the contestants with two choices: either abandon Martin, who was struggling to keep up, or assist him. Opting for teamwork, the group decided to help him instead of leaving him behind.

Later in the episode, Tony Reyes, a 26-year-old media director, fainted, prompting the medical team to evacuate him. Despite his reluctance to leave, the medics prioritized his health before his condition could deteriorate. Martin later pointed out the seriousness of Reyes’s situation, echoing that anyone could face such a challenge:

“Tony didn’t quit. His body quit on him. That hit at home ’cause that could be any one of us.”

As the episode came to a close, it was time to vote a contestant out. The first voted off in The Summit season 1 was Mattie, who argued for the elimination of MMA referee Jennye Stirlen. Show host Manu Bennett revealed that when a contestant is eliminated, the prize fund is evenly distributed among the remaining players.

All contestants, except for Amy Stephens, voted to eliminate Mattie. Upset and angry, she expressed her frustration at her early exit from the competition:

“I didn’t want their fake hugs. Do you want to get the knife out of my back? The mountain will show people’s true colors. Stay true to who you are.”

The premiere episode of The Summit is available for streaming on CBS and Paramount Plus. Episode 1 will be re-aired on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, from 9:30 to 11 p.m. ET/PT exclusively on CBS.
