The Sequel to ‘The Goonies’ is Officially Happening!

If another adventure with One-Eyed Willy is on the horizon, it appears we might have the original visionary at the helm. Exciting news has surfaced regarding the development of The Goonies 2 at Warner Bros., with Chris Columbus potentially returning to write the sequel.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of The Goonies, a film that continues to resonate with audiences. The story, which follows a group of young friends on a treasure hunt to save their homes, captures the essence of friendship, adventure, and nostalgia. Though I came along after its initial release, this film has been a beloved part of my childhood, and its legacy endures to this day.

Recent reports suggest that Columbus, who also played a crucial role in the original film, might be crafting the screenplay for the much-anticipated sequel. While there’s a natural hesitance about revisiting such a cherished classic, the prospect of reuniting with our favorite characters is incredibly appealing. According to a report from Deadline, Warner Bros. is also considering Columbus for writing treatments for a new Gremlins film alongside this sequel to The Goonies.

At this stage, details remain sparse, particularly regarding the return of the original cast, which included beloved actors such as Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green.

You might question the need for a sequel, especially with the absence of the beloved Richard Donner as director. However, I believe there is ample opportunity to tell a compelling story that resonates with today’s audiences, set in the heart of Astoria, Oregon.

Is a Sequel to The Goonies Necessary?

As an ardent admirer of this film, my connection to it runs deep. For me, revisiting this narrative is only worthwhile if it includes the original cast and Columbus. Though we may not capture the exact charm of the Donner era, I trust Warner Bros. is making the right moves in exploring a sequel.

While many creative minds could craft a story inspired by the Goonies’ spirit, such as what was seen with Skeleton Crew by Christopher Ford and Jon Watts, returning to Oregon with Mikey and his pals calls for involving the original cast and crew.

I’m curious to uncover what storyline Warner Bros. will develop for this sequel. Yes, issues surrounding development continue to persist, but the search for One-Eyed Willy’s treasure creates a unique opportunity for storytelling. I am eager to see Columbus channel the thrill of the original film into this next chapter because, as we all know, Goonies never say die.
