The inaugural season of The Sandman captivated audiences when it premiered on Netflix in 2022. As the dark fantasy series prepares for its much-anticipated return in 2025, fans can rejoice at the confirmation of Johanna Constantine’s return, a character who quickly became a favorite among viewers.
Based on Neil Gaiman’s critically acclaimed DC graphic novel series, The Sandman follows the tumultuous lives of the Endless, a family of enigmatic cosmic beings that includes figures like Desire, Death, and Despair. The narrative centers around Dream, portrayed by Tom Sturridge, who escapes over a century of captivity and embarks on a quest to reclaim his lost belongings and restore his realm, which has fallen into chaos. Echoing the anthology format of the original comics, Season 1 presented various unique characters and mythological beings that Dream encountered on his journey, including Johanna, an ancestor of the iconic John Constantine, played by Jenna Coleman.
Jenna Coleman Discusses Her Return in The Sandman
Although Jenna Coleman’s involvement in Season 1 was limited to just three episodes, her presence sparked speculation regarding her return for the new season. Recent set photos confirmed her participation, and Coleman herself later validated the rumors in an interview with Screen Rant, stating, “Well, I was seen on set actually, so yeah, I definitely am… I’m back in Season 2.”
“Yeah. Yeah, I think I’m allowed to say that. I’m pretty sure I am. Well, I was seen on set actually, so yeah, I definitely am. Yeah. Yeah, I’m back in Season 2. I’d say [season two] is probably more visually stunning than it was the first year. I mean, I’ve done bits of ADR. What can I say without Allan Heinberg shouting at me? The scale is, I mean, it’s so cinematic and so I think it’s a very unique show. So yeah, everything that you loved in Season 1 is there and more for sure.”
In the first season, Coleman portrayed both Johanna Constantine, an occult detective, and her historical counterpart, Lady Johanna. Dream seeks her assistance to reclaim his magical pouch of sand, which leads to her liberation from a troubling nightmare. It remains to be seen whether Coleman will reprise the role of the modern Johanna, the Lady Johanna, or potentially both in Season 2.
Following the narrative laid out in the graphic novels, Season 2 will introduce exciting new characters such as Odin, Loki, and Thor, promising to delve into the banquet storyline where Dream interacts with a diverse array of deities.
