Spoiler Warning: The article below includes spoilers from Season 7, Episode 1 of The Rookie, titled “The Shot.”
As fans approach the premiere of The Rookie Season 7, there exists a sense of cautious anticipation, particularly after a lackluster Season 6. Nevertheless, the opening episode does a commendable job of addressing some of the issues from the previous season’s finale, albeit with a few lingering shortcomings. Created by Alexi Hawley, the series resumes several weeks after the dramatic events of the Season 6 conclusion, which featured Oscar Hutchinson and Jason Wyler breaking out of prison, seemingly intent on revenge against John Nolan and Bailey Nune.
The Rookie Season 7 Premiere Quickly Dismisses Season 6 Cliffhangers
Lack of Progress in Jason, Oscar & Monica’s Narratives
Despite the thrilling cliffhangers that left viewers on the edge of their seats at the end of Season 6, the Season 7 premiere largely overlooks these narratives. Opening with a failed raid in search of Jason, the episode promptly shifts focus elsewhere, diverting attention from the fates of both Oscar and Jason. Additionally, character Monica is noticeably absent, with Angela Lopez vaguely mentioning her recent exploits with Interpol in Bolivia.
This lack of follow-up on key cliffhangers diminishes the episode’s impact, leaving it feeling more like a filler than a significant opening. While the subplot involving a stolen battlefield nuke is compelling and filled with tension, it would appear more naturally later in the season, rather than overshadowing unresolved storylines.
Jenna Dewan is confirmed to return as Bailey in Episode 3 of Season 7, thus paving the way for Jason’s anticipated reappearance. Given the circumstances involving Dewan’s maternity leave, Bailey’s absence from the premiere is understandable, yet it further emphasizes the disconnect in the episode’s flow.
Season 7 Effectively Develops Tim & Lucy’s Story
The Slow Burn of Chenford Returns
Among the season’s highlights is the evolving relationship between Tim and Lucy. The episode skillfully develops their dynamic, showcasing improvements in the tension that lingered after their breakup in Season 6. The writers wisely refrain from rushing their reconciliation, allowing their chemistry to simmer gradually. This nuanced approach paints a believable path toward their eventual reunion while maintaining audience interest.

Lucy takes on the role of a training officer, engaging in lighthearted competition with Tim as they mentor the new rookies. Their playful banter and an absence of excessive drama breathe fresh air into their interactions, hinting at potential rekindling without overtly rushing it. The show finds strength in Tim and Lucy’s slow-burn relationship trajectory.
Aaron’s Exit Is Poorly Managed, Yet New Rookies Are Well Introduced
Tru Valentino’s Departure Deserves More Attention
Perhaps the most disheartening element of the premiere is how Aaron Thorsen’s exit is addressed—alluding to his transfer to North Hollywood due to personal issues from last season. This underwhelming explanation undermines Aaron as a character and does a disservice to both his storyline and the actor, Tru Valentino.
Contrastingly, the introductions of new characters Miles Penn and Seth Ridley are handled with aplomb. Miles, who previously served as an officer in a small Texas community, relocates to Los Angeles in search of greater challenges. Seth, on the other hand, is an eager rookie enthusiastic about making a difference. Their contrasting personalities set the stage for interesting character development throughout the season.
The Rookie Season 7 airs new episodes weekly at 10 PM ET every Tuesday on ABC.
