The Rings of Power Season 2 Episode 8 Ending Explained: What Happens to Galadriel?

The highly anticipated finale of The Rings of Power season 2 premiered on Amazon Prime Video on October 3, 2024. While this climactic episode addressed several lingering questions from season 2, it also introduced new mysteries, leaving fans eager for a potential season 3.

The episode 8 synopsis, titled Shadow and Flame, states:

“Season Finale. The free peoples of Middle-earth struggle against the forces of darkness.”

During episode 7 of The Rings of Power season 2, it was revealed that Galadriel possessed the nine rings crafted by Celebrimbor under the influence of Sauron.

In the finale, Sauron demands the return of these rings from Galadriel, resulting in an intense confrontation.

Sauron injures Galadriel with his crown and seizes the rings from her. This attack sends Galadriel into the dark realm. Fortunately, her fellow Elves arrive just in time to rescue her.

As episode 8 concludes, Galadriel is back on her feet, gearing up for the impending showdown with Sauron.

The Rings of Power Season 2 Finale: Galadriel vs. Sauron

In episode 7, Celebrimbor was captured and brought before Sauron. During the finale, Sauron demands that he hand over the rings. Celebrimbor refuses to reveal their location and ominously predicts that a single man will ultimately be the downfall of Sauron, with the rings playing a key role.

Predictably, Sauron resorts to torture and kills Celebrimbor. Meanwhile, the Orcs have shifted their allegiance, now serving Sauron instead of Adar. They manage to track down Galadriel and bring her to Sauron.

Despite being confronted, Galadriel refuses to relinquish the nine rings. A fierce battle ensues, where Sauron uses various disguises to gain the upper hand against her.

It’s clear that Sauron hesitates to hurt Galadriel; however, she remains adamant about not compromising with him. Consequently, he stabs her with his crown. Galadriel, determined to protect her ring, leaps off a cliff.

The closing moments of The Rings of Power season 2 finale reveal Galadriel suspended in the dark realm due to Sauron’s inflicted injury. Thankfully, her Elven friends manage to rescue her using her ring to restore her life. The Elves conclude that they must confront Sauron before his power grows too formidable.

Why Do the Orcs Betray Adar?

Throughout The Rings of Power season 2, Adar has shown himself to be a capable leader. Nonetheless, his relentless pursuit of Sauron and sometimes brutal methods have frustrated many Orcs.

In episode 8, Sauron manipulates the discontent among the Orcs, promising that he truly cares for them. He persuades them to switch sides and fight for him rather than Adar.

As Galadriel predicted, Sauron successfully steals Adar’s Orc army through his deceitful tactics.

During the finale, Adar attempts to negotiate a deal with Galadriel. Originally an Elf, he vows to assist Galadriel in defeating Sauron before taking his army and disappearing forever. However, just as they are about to finalize the agreement, an Orc fatally stabs Adar.

King Durin’s Death and the Stranger’s Transformation into ‘Grand Elf’

At one pivotal moment, King Durin reaps the benefits of his aggressive mining policies when he uncovers a vast treasure.

However, the greed of King Durin has severe consequences; the incessant mining awakens the Balrog lurking beneath the mines.

In one of the most emotional sequences of The Rings of Power season 2, King Durin recognizes his errors and entrusts his son with leadership in his absence. He sacrifices himself by confronting the Balrog alone, a courageous act that ultimately saves his son.

Meanwhile, the Stranger finally encounters the Dark Wizard during the finale. The Dark Wizard offers him immense power, but he declines. When the Dark Wizard unleashes destruction upon the Stranger and those around him, the Stranger uses his magical abilities to save everyone.

This act earns him the title ‘Grand Elf’, a nod that Tolkien fans will understand as synonymous with Gandalf.

The The Rings of Power season 2 episode 8 wraps up numerous storylines while leaving plenty unresolved, which sets the stage for a possible season 3 that has yet to be officially announced. Stay tuned for all updates.
