Created by Paul William Davies and produced by the esteemed Shonda Rhimes, The Residence features Uzo Aduba as detective Cordelia Cupp, who dives into a high-stakes mystery involving the murder of a prominent White House staff member. Although the story is fictional, it is enriched by real-world foundations inspired by journalist Kate Anderson Brower‘s book, The Residence: Inside the Private World of The White House. This blend of fact and fiction, paired with an engaging Upstairs, Downstairs/Downton Abbey-like dynamic, creates a captivating mix of humor and drama.

Does the World Need More Iconic Detectives?

Many renowned detectives are hailed as the “world’s best, ” with names like Sherlock Holmes, Benoit Blanc, and Hercule Poirot leading the pack. Now, with the introduction of Cordelia Cupp, a Black female detective, we witness a powerful evolution in the genre. Though she embodies the eccentricities typical of great detectives, her character dives deeper. Cordelia’s passion for birdwatching illustrates her distinctive quirks, yet her real strength lies in her method of investigation.

One remarkable aspect of Cordelia Cupp is her listening ability. Instead of bombarding her interviewees with constant questions, she employs a keen gaze that encourages them to reveal their truths organically. This technique allows for a more profound exploration of the narrative while emphasizing her exceptional observational skills. It’s refreshing to see a character who commands attention without losing patience, crafting her investigations with a delicate yet authoritative approach.

Beyond her detective role, Cordelia is a nurturing aunt, a protective sister, and an admirer of stylish tweed blazers complemented by leather shoulder pads that many would envy. Although she experiences moments of frustration, she remains composed, allowing the narrative to unfold naturally. Her talents extend beyond crime-solving as she skillfully maneuvers life with a kitchen knife for repairs, carries a substantial bird identification guide, and embraces global travels.
