WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for The Recruit season 2, episode 6.
The Recruit Season 2 Conclusion: Owen’s Mission Accomplished
The finale of The Recruit season 2 sees Noah Centineo’s character, Owen Hendricks, successfully reuniting Teo Yoo’s Jang Kyun with his abducted wife. This season mirrors Owen’s previous experiences from season 1, as he receives a mysterious letter from another ex-CIA operative that sets off a chain of events leading him to South Korea for further investigation. Here, he learns that Jang Kyun, a member of South Korea’s National Intelligence Service, is entangled in graymail activities, extorting the CIA while threatening to unveil sensitive information, much like Laura Haddock’s character Max Meladze did in the first season.
Initially presented in the season 2 trailer as a potential ally, Jang Kyun’s relationship with Owen evolves into a perplexing dynamic as the episodes unfold. The first season concluded with a cliffhanger surrounding the true identity of Marta, a false identity for Max’s daughter, Karolina, who operates under the guise of the Russian mafia enforcer Nichka. In this episode, she adopts a new alias to gather intelligence on the Yakuza gang that has detained Jang Kyun’s wife, ultimately leading to her betrayal of Owen.
How The U. S.Navy Came to Owen and Jang Kyun’s Aid
A Dramatic Submarine Rescue from the Russian Coast Guard

During a tense escape after being rescued by Yoo Jin and her father, Owen, Jang Kyun, and Nan Lee find themselves pursued by the Russian Coast Guard. In a surprising turn, a U. S.Navy submarine surfaces, effectively deterring their Russian chasers. Yoo Jin, portrayed by Shin Do-Hyun, is a childhood acquaintance of Owen from Korea.
The Navy officer humorously claims he relishes every opportunity to intimidate the Russians. Although the reasoning behind the Navy’s timely arrival is never clearly articulated, it is suggested that Nyland reached out for support following a tense confrontation with CIA Director Alton West, who had sanctioned the elimination of Jang Kyun.
Nichka’s Complex Role: Loyalties and Betrayal
The Most Cunning Player of The Recruit Season 2

Nichka’s evolution throughout season 2 of The Recruit reveals her as a character adept at playing all sides of the ongoing conflict involving the CIA, FSB, and Yakuza, primarily driven by personal gains of wealth and power. Ultimately, she succumbs to the highest bidder, aligning herself with the FSB.
As she betrays Owen, Nichka admits that she stands to gain a promotion within the FSB for her actions; a move that possibly puts her own safety at risk if she fails to deliver Owen and Jang Kyun as prisoners.
The Climactic Finale: Why Nichka Eliminates Dawn
Stopping Dawn’s Deadly Orders

In a pivotal moment, Dawn receives clearance from CIA Director West to kill Jang Kyun, a move detrimental to Nichka’s broader scheme. Realizing Dawn’s relentless nature, Nichka prepares for confrontation, a decision that drastically alters the trajectory of The Recruit’s second season. Both women are fiercely pursuing their ambitions as Dawn seeks a promotion of her own, known as the Moscow Point, while Nichka is motivated by her financial aspirations.
The Reason Behind Nan Hee’s Kidnapping by the Yakuza
Using NGO Operations for Crypto Infiltration

In the early episodes of season 2, Jang Kyun is under the impression that the Russians are responsible for his wife Nan Hee’s abduction. However, through Nichka, Owen reveals that it is, in fact, the Yakuza behind the kidnapping. Compounding his guilt, Jang Kyun reflects on how his wife’s NGO was unknowingly used to transmit a traceable cryptocurrency—developed by the NIS and CIA—into Yakuza operations.
Owen’s Rescue Strategy Explored
Not Planning for a Ransom Payment

The climax of season 2 culminates in a coordinated rescue effort involving Owen, Lester, and Dawn to free Nan Hee. Precautions were taken by CIA Director West and Wyland regarding the risky operation, especially after Nichka compromised their plans by enlisting the Russian Coast Guard for an investigation of Yoo Jin’s boat.
Disguised as representatives coordinating a kidnapping-for-ransom scenario, Owen and Jang Kyun approach the Yakuza with the pretense of negotiating a $10 million payment for Nan Hee. Their true intent, however, is to lure the Yakuza into international waters for an ambush.
Violet’s Manipulative Strategies Against Owen
Undermining Owen from the Shadows

Violet orchestrates a plan to release Janus from NIS custody by striking a dubious deal with Grace, which seems designed to make Owen scapegoat for the exposure of two NIS agents, Jang Kyun and Jae King. The exact terms of Violet’s agreement with Grace remain ambiguous, but they are likely to become a major narrative point in season 3.
Noteworthy is Hannah uncovering Jae’s disguise while he attempts to hack her laptop, indicating that the tension is far from resolved. With the possibility of Jang Kyun returning as a CIA agent, Violet’s attempts to undermine Owen could have lasting consequences on their dynamics as they head to Washington D. C.
The Fate of Jang Kyun: CIA Agent or Not?
Owen’s Recruitment Pitch in the Series Finale

Season 2 sets the stage for Jang Kyun’s potential transition into a CIA operative. As Owen evolves from a novice to a more seasoned field agent, he may play a crucial role alongside Jang Kyun in upcoming missions. Owen grapples with the moral complexities of his undertakings, including life-and-death situations. Nevertheless, the partnership with Jang Kyun may solidify his commitment to the CIA, even as Grace is likely to challenge this development in The Recruit season 3.
