Dragon Ball Super has seen a period of relative silence following the unfortunate passing of renowned creator Akira Toriyama in March 2024. However, producer Akio Iyoku remains optimistic about the franchise’s future. In a recent appearance on the Japanese radio program, All Night Nippon, Iyoku addressed both the franchise’s legacy and its next steps, hinting that fans can expect new announcements regarding future projects within the year. While specific details were scarce, he did share insights into past developments, notably the inspiration behind the successful film, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
The 2022 film marked a significant departure for the series, shifting focus from its typical protagonists, Goku and Vegeta, to spotlight beloved characters Piccolo and Gohan. This strategic decision was seen as a bold move aimed at revitalizing interest in other characters who had been underutilized. Iyoku disclosed that this shift occurred after he consulted Toriyama about how to reintroduce the fan-favorite Namekian fighter, who had gradually become less prominent amid the rising power of the Saiyans.
Shared Affection for Piccolo
A Strong Bond Over Piccolo
Historically, Piccolo has been a cherished character within the Dragon Ball universe, famously being Akira Toriyama’s favorite. After Iyoku’s radio appearance, it was reaffirmed that he too holds a special affinity for the green-skinned warrior. As the original series’ first ‘villain turned hero’, Piccolo gained immense popularity due to his heroic deeds and significant character development. However, once he became an honorary member of Goku’s family, he often remained in the shadows as other characters surged in power.
Fortunately for fans, both Iyoku and Toriyama acknowledged Piccolo’s importance and decided to reinvigorate his character through Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, granting him and Gohan exciting new transformations that restore their competitive edge against Goku and Vegeta. Although the manga is currently on hiatus, it is slated to resume in 2025, with both characters likely to play pivotal roles in the unfolding narrative.

Prior to the release of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, many fans expressed frustration regarding the treatment of both Piccolo and Gohan. Once essential players in monumental battles, they became sidelined as Goku and Vegeta ascended to near god-like statuses. With the latest film, these characters regained their stature, showcasing their strength alongside the franchise’s iconic heroes. The story’s last installment featured Gohan training with Broly on Beerus’ planet, which provided him with unprecedented exposure compared to previous arcs.
The emergence of Black Frieza poses an intense challenge that will undoubtedly test the might of Earth’s defenders. As the narrative progresses, it becomes imperative for Dragon Ball Super to capitalize on the revitalized strengths of Piccolo and Gohan, integrating them into significant confrontations. A special one-shot chapter is expected later this year, which hints that epic battles lie ahead, thanks in large part to the vision of Iyoku and Toriyama.
