What If…? Season 3: A Wild Dive into the Gamma Wars
Spoilers ahead for What If…? season 3, episode 1.
The highly anticipated third season of What If…? kicks off with a spectacular premiere that draws inspiration from popular franchises like Godzilla, Power Rangers, and Pacific Rim. Titled “What If… The Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers?”, this episode plunges the Marvel Universe into the gripping “Gamma Wars,”positioning Bruce Banner, alongside his alter ego, the Hulk, at the epicenter of a thrilling conflict.
The New Team of Heroes
This season’s inaugural episode is a delightful chaos that surprises viewers, even if it may not have been explicitly requested. While the visuals are stunning and the Hulkzilla and Mighty Morphin’ Avengers concept is undeniably entertaining, the true highlight is the unexpected roster of heroes. Instead of the original iconic six Avengers—who perished during the initial conflict—the series now showcases a diverse ensemble comprising Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, Monica Rambeau, Shang-Chi, Marc Spector, Red Guardian, Melina Vostkoff, and Nakia. This unconventional collection of heroes adds a fresh dynamic to the storyline, breathing new life into the series.
Character Spotlights
As a long-time fan, I’ve been eagerly advocating for the return of Shang-Chi, while hoping for a second season of Moon Knight. David Harbour’s Red Guardian consistently delivers comedic relief, while Melina showcases impressive reactions. Bucky’s character shines in his unburdened state, Nakia brings the intellect, and I am particularly eager for a crossover between Monica and Sam within the Sacred Timeline. This scenario reinforces my belief that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) should explore more diverse team-ups beyond just Avengers films.
The Friendship of Sam Wilson and Bruce Banner
At the heart of this episode is the remarkably developed friendship between Sam Wilson and Bruce Banner. The episode opens with a clever recreation of the first encounter between Sam and Steve Rogers from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. As Sam and Banner’s relationship evolves into a meaningful friendship, a fateful sailing trip disrupts this bond, forcing Bruce to retreat and initiating a cascade of chaos.
Sam Wilson: The Ideal Captain America
This episode not only underscores why Sam Wilson is an exceptional Captain America but also reminds us of his background in therapy and veteran support. His role in helping Bruce articulate his fears and emotions cultivates a safe environment that is both refreshing and necessary. The poignant moment where Sam reassures Bruce, looking deeply into his massive eye, exemplifies stellar character development. It raises the question: why haven’t we seen this dynamic explored before, and might it ever resurface, especially with a potential Red Hulk on the horizon?
Reflections on the Series Direction
When What If…? was initially announced, many anticipated a series of alternate realities—what if pivotal moments had been altered for our beloved characters? Fans envisioned scenarios like Hawkeye sacrificing himself in place of Natasha or Loki being cast out instead of Thor. However, the series has taken a more adventurous turn, presenting outlandish concepts and overarching narratives that, while engaging, may sometimes detract from the accessibility that fans hoped for. While I have appreciated the series, particularly episodes centered around Strange Supreme, there remains a nostalgic longing for a different approach.
The Bright Side of Unlikely Character Pairings
Nonetheless, What If…? continues to provide character interactions that are unlikely to find a place in the MCU’s live-action ventures. For this creative freedom, I am deeply grateful, and I find myself wishing for more collaborations between Sam and Bruce in future episodes!
