What unfolds in The Penguin episode 2?
Sofia’s hallucinations
The episode kicks off with Sofia Falcone experiencing a hallucination connected to her time in Arkham with Alberto Falcone. The vision is abruptly interrupted as someone approaches and shoots Alberto, bringing Sofia back to reality. Meanwhile, Oswald meets with the Maronis in prison to update them on the transportation of the Drops and how his men can seize them from the Falcones.
However, during the transportation, chaos ensues, resulting in heavy losses for both the Falcones and Maronis. Despite the mishaps, Oswald returns to the Falcone estate unharmed. Sofia confronts Luca, questioning why justice hasn’t been served for Alberto’s murder, only to be dismissed by him.
While leaving, Oswald encounters Sofia in the hallway, encouraging her to take the reins of the Falcone family business due to her tenacity. She misinterprets Oswald’s intentions as flattery and brushes him off. Suspecting a mole within the family, she hires a private investigator to uncover the truth.
Alberto’s funeral
The majority of episode 2 unfolds during Alberto’s funeral. Before attending, Oswald receives distressing news about his mother’s worsening dementia and makes a brief visit to her. He reassures her that he will make her proud before heading to the funeral.
At the funeral, Oswald intends to provide Luca with evidence of Johnny Vitti’s infidelity with his wife to diminish Vitti’s standing; however, the chance slips away. Spotting Sofia alone, he engages her in conversation, sharing his family’s experience with grief, which begins to foster a connection between them.
Simultaneously, Sofia learns from her investigator that one of Maroni’s men, who was injured during the drug heist, is available for interrogation. However, the man remains unconscious, complicating Sofia’s efforts to extract valuable information.
Oswald also hears from the Maroni family that one of their associates is in Falcone custody, leading him to search urgently for this individual to protect his cover. He instructs Victor to plant stolen diamonds in Johnny Vitti’s car while he continues his search for the Maroni operative.
Oswald escapes danger
The climactic moments of The Penguin episode 2 see Oswald locate the Maroni goon and rouse him from unconsciousness. He orders the man to inform Sofia that Vitti is the traitor collaborating with Maroni. However, he soon receives a call from Victor, confessing his hesitation to execute the diamond planting plan. To maintain his image, Oswald kills the Maroni goon.
When the body is discovered, the Falcones institute a lockdown at the funeral to identify the rat. In a tense standoff, Oswald gets embroiled in a physical confrontation with Vitti and cleverly plants the murder weapon in the pocket of another Falcone associate who intervenes.
Upon the weapon’s discovery, Sofia demands to execute justice against the identified killer, but Luca seizes the opportunity and shoots the individual instead. He then suggests that Sofia should leave Gotham as her position in the family is no longer required.
The episode concludes with Sofia contacting Oswald, expressing her frustration over the Falcone family’s constant undermining and her readiness to reclaim her power. She proposes an alliance with Oswald, who is eager to partner with her.
