Upon your arrival at Paradise Island, the initial region of The Outer Worlds 2, you will discover that the island is divided into two distinct sections: the southern and northern sides. While the southern side is largely accessible without restrictions from the beginning of your journey, the northern side poses considerable barriers.
Gaining access to the north requires you to undertake various intricate tasks. One of the primary challenges is to cross the main bridge, which is under the strict control of the Protectorate. They are not particularly inclined to grant you passage, even if you successfully navigate the numerous landmines surrounding the area. However, if you are prepared to undertake some questionable activities for the Warden, you may find a way to cross.
This quest is not without its moral dilemmas, as appeasing the guard at the bridge may involve actions that feel ethically ambiguous. Nevertheless, this comprehensive guide aims to streamline your journey.
Navigating the Bridge Quest
To initiate your quest, make your way to the bridge located directly north of Fairfield. It’s advisable for players to follow the narrow path leading directly to the Warden stationed at the bridge, as deviating from this route exposes you to the mines scattered on either side.
Upon reaching the Warden, identified as Weidtraut, you may be surprised by her willingness to discuss your desire to cross the river. However, this opportunity comes with stipulations.
You will be tasked with capturing two traitors of the Protectorate, and in exchange, you will receive safe passage. Should you choose this course, prepare for the consequences of your actions. As the saying goes, “You can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.” Your targets include Ida Routledge and, more shockingly, the Warden’s cousin, Charlton.
Locating Ida Routledge
Ida Routledge is arguably the more straightforward target for your quest, as her storyline ties in with ‘A Final Death of Gravity’ quest. Completing this secondary quest is advisable early on, as it rewards you with a gadget that allows for double jumping.
To find Ida, travel to Spire Grove, situated just southwest of Fairfield. If your Engineering skill is level 3 or higher, you can take a shortcut via an elevator in Fairfield. Otherwise, you’ll need to trek around using a more extended path.
Upon arrival, you’ll witness a character named Jackson fall to his demise, which will prompt a conversation with some trapped workers seeking assistance with their machinery. They will inform you of Ida’s tragic end; she sacrificed herself to the rotating gears in allegiance to the Protectorate, leading to Jackson’s futile attempt to rescue himself with thruster boots.
You can collect the thruster boots alongside the schematics essential for the accompanying Perilous Trip To The Grove quest. However, your primary objective here is to find Ida, not to assist the workers. Simply search the vicinity, and near the machinery’s gears, you will discover Ida’s severed arm—sufficient evidence to satisfy Warden Weidtraut. With this, your focus can now shift to Charlton.
Tracking Down Charlton Weidtraut
Once you have dealt with Ida, you can proceed to Westport, an area that has suffered severely due to Auntie’s Choice’s onslaught during the takeover. Within the aftermath, you’ll encounter Charlton adorned with vivid purple lipstick.
If you seek an easy 50x Bits bonus upon completing the quest, consider exploring Charlton’s residence in the lower, flooded section of Westport. Here, you’ll encounter some Crabbles to defeat and uncover that the purple stain on Charlton’s face is a result of his addiction to Purpleberry Munch, Crunch, and Bunch.
Armed with a Speech skill of 3+, you can convince this naïve character to accompany you to the bridge under the pretense of a top-secret Purpleberry project. Assuming you possess the requisite speech ability, your task should be completed, allowing you to return to the Warden.
Quest Completion and Rewards
Returning to the bridge, you’ll find Charlton in a critical situation, kneeling before the Warden, facing execution. First, you must observe this event unfold. If you’ve garnered information regarding his Purpleberry Munch habit rather than solely relying on your speech, you’ll receive additional Bits and experience points.
Next, hand over Ida’s arm to conclude the quest. While the physical rewards for this undertaking may be modest compared to other quests, players can expect to earn 2160 XP, along with the newfound ability to cross the bridge without hindrance.
