Gabriel Basso, the lead actor of The Night Agent, recently discussed the show’s incredible success on Netflix as anticipation builds for its second season. The conclusion of season 1 marked the ending of Matthew Quirk’s original novel, while the forthcoming episodes promise a fresh narrative where Peter (Basso) and Rose (Luciane Buchanan) delve into a new conspiracy. Impressively, season 1 has secured its place among Netflix’s top English-language series, accumulating an astounding 803.2 million watch hours, making it the platform’s seventh most-watched show in that category.
In a conversation with GamesRadar+, Basso expressed his mindset regarding the series’ monumental success. He emphasized that his primary focus is on delivering the crew’s vision, especially that of series creator Shawn Ryan. For Basso, as long as the team feels pride in their work, the accolades do not weigh heavily on him. Here’s a glimpse of what he shared:
There is an awareness of how big the show is but I wouldn’t say it’s a pressure that makes you nervous. At least not for me. I’m not saying that I’m relaxed all the time, it’s more that it’s so many people you can’t even wrap your head around it, holding yourself accountable to hundreds of thousands of people, it’s just kind of ridiculous.
And so the people that I’m accountable to are the crew, knowing that the crew are there every day to work and that I have a job to make the show good, and that the writers put time in to make it good, and that Shawn [Ryan, creator] is overseeing it. I just try to make it as simple as possible. And if I can look at the crew at the end of the day and we all shake hands saying ‘you did well’, like I feel good about this show, then I feel good about it. If the whole world hated it but all the crew was proud of it, I’d be fine.

Prioritizing Quality Over Numbers

The upcoming season 2 is set to deliver another captivating storyline with Peter and Rose confronting a looming threat in New York City. This time, the duo will be joined by new characters, including Peter’s superior, Catherine (Amanda Warren), who will further enrich the intricate plot. While it remains to be seen whether season 2 can replicate the groundbreaking success of its predecessor, Basso’s comments indicate that his primary concern is maintaining the integrity and quality of the series.
In addition to his leading role in The Night Agent, Basso is also slated to feature in an untitled film directed by renowned filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow.
