KonoSuba – God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! significantly altered the landscape of isekai anime, reshaping various tropes and character archetypes that have since become fundamental elements of the genre. The influence of KonoSuba lingers long after its premiere, paving the way for other series that expand on its innovative foundations. Among these is the comedic marvel Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious, recognized as one of the best non-KonoSuba isekai comedies.

Narrative and Setting
Title Significance
Similar to many titles originating from light novel platforms like Japan’s Shousetsuka ni Narou (Let’s Become Authors), “Cautious Hero”has a lengthy official title that succinctly encapsulates the story’s premise. The goddess Ristarte is tasked with summoning a hero to save the daunting world of Gaeabrande from a Demon Lord. Recognized for its extreme difficulty, Gaeabrande requires Ristarte to select an exceptionally powerful hero capable of victory.
Ristarte opts for Seiya Ryuuguuin, a young man with unparalleled stats; however, she soon realizes that despite his strength, Seiya’s excessive cautiousness is borderline absurd—he’s the type of hero who would deploy his ultimate power against a seemingly innocuous slime, just to be safe. Seiya insists on rigorous training before even considering entering the more benign regions of Gaeabrande. Initially, Ristarte may find his extreme caution excessive, but upon arriving in Gaeabrande, the grim realities make Seiya’s wariness all too understandable.
The manga, illustrated by Koyuki, ran in Fujimi Shobo’s shōnen manga publication Monthly Dragon Age from November 2018 to October 2022, with a total of six volumes. Following its popularity, “Cautious Hero”was adapted into an anime by White Fox (known for shows like Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World), airing from October to December 2019, consisting of 12 episodes.

Strengths of Cautious Hero
Seamless Integration of Humor and Isekai Adventure
“Cautious Hero”stands out for its adept handling of the isekai comedy genre. Instead of merely flipping the script or relying on meta-humor, it creates a genuinely engaging story set in a rich world that earnestly embraces the genre’s conventions. By effectively playing into the notion of power fantasies, it presents an overpowered protagonist who remains relatable. It skillfully adopts an archetype reminiscent of the comedic interplay found in “KonoSuba,”yet evolves into its unique narrative, avoiding superficial imitation.
Additionally, the action sequences are thrilling, showcasing Seiya’s penchant for cautious overkill. The dynamic of their comedic duo—balancing a straight-man and a silly counterpart—draws from more than just disbelief in Seiya’s tactics.
At the heart of the narrative is the relationship between Seiya and Ristarte, providing a poignant emotional core. Although this aspect may not receive as much development as it warrants, the series includes an impactful twist in its finale that challenges its comedy classification. Despite the abrupt emotional shift, “Cautious Hero”manages to conclude successfully in just 12 episodes, achieving notable memorability. Its outrageous humor, alongside genuinely tearful moments, elevate its status in the genre.
For fans of comedy and isekai, as well as those intrigued by the evolution of these subgenres spurred by landmark series, “Cautious Hero”exemplifies how isekai can intersect with humor post-KonoSuba. It stands as a unique entity, distinct amidst the current oversaturation of isekai narratives in anime.
