Despite not announcing any iPad upgrades last year, Apple appears to be taking its time once again this year. The release of the OLED iPad Pro has been delayed once again, as the manufacturing of the display involves complex production techniques. Although it was originally expected to launch in November alongside the M3 MacBook Pro models, Apple has decided to postpone the release until this year, possibly due to technical challenges. According to prominent analyst Mark Gurman, the previously anticipated launch time frame of March to April has been ruled out due to production issues.

Production setbacks cause further delays for the release of the OLED iPad Pro

Based on the most recent reports from Korea, the highly-anticipated OLED display is the cause of the delayed release of the revamped iPad Pro. It seems that the main reason for the delay is the OLED display, which is considered the most impressive feature of the iPad Pro. Apple maintains strict standards and demands top-notch quality, so any shortcomings that fall below their expectations can lead to supply disruptions.

Apple collaborated with Samsung and LG to manufacture the 11-inch and 13-inch OLED panels for their latest product. However, it seems that Samsung is having difficulty meeting Apple’s demands. The new panel technology and the complex production process are causing issues, resulting in lower than expected yields. According to the Korean news website Hankooki, the suppliers have reported struggling with OLED production, with LG being the beneficiary of the situation.

Samsung has experienced a lower-than-anticipated production rate for their 11-inch panel, resulting in a smaller quantity available for Apple’s order of the smaller OLED iPad Pro. As a result, Apple has redistributed some of their 11-inch OLED orders from Samsung to LG Display. It has been reported that LG will be able to produce hundreds of thousands of units by the following month. It is now speculated that LG will supply approximately 60 percent of the total OLED panels for both the 11-inch and 13-inch models of the iPad Pro.

Despite meeting Apple’s quality standards and requirements, LG has successfully taken a portion of Samsung’s business. It remains to be seen how Samsung Display will react to this and if they will make any efforts to enhance their production capacity and yield. The supplier seems to be facing challenges with their intricate production techniques, resulting in lower yields for their OLED panels.

The anticipated OLED panel, which has been reported to have unparalleled display quality, is the cause for the delayed release of the redesigned iPad Pro. According to previous reports, Apple has scheduled the launch of the OLED iPad Pro models for early May, which is a month after the speculated time frame. This release date also falls a month before the company’s WWDC 2024 event, where they are expected to announce updates for products such as iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and macOS 15.
