Since its launch over ten years ago, The Sims 4 has captivated players with a continuous stream of updates and 17 expansions. Despite this, many fans are eager for a fresh Sims experience. Enter Project Rene, a forthcoming title that aims to deliver just that, although players may need to exercise some patience before they can dive in.
Project Rene was officially unveiled in October 2022, with Lyndsay Pearson, EA’s Vice President of Franchise Creative for The Sims, indicating that the project is in its “very early”development stages and projected for release several years later. While anticipation has been building, it appears likely that a release could occur in 2025, although a cautious approach might suggest waiting until 2026 for a potentially more polished experience.
Should Project Rene Delay its Launch Until 2026?
2025: A Promising Year for Life-Simulation and Cozy Games
The life-simulation genre has gained considerable traction over the past decade, with titles like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and The Sims leading the charge. As the genre continues to flourish, 2025 is set to see the launch of at least six much-anticipated cozy games.
The year will kick off with Hello Kitty Island Adventure, making its debut on consoles and PC on January 30 after being an Apple Arcade exclusive. In March, players can look forward to Wanderstop, Tales of the Shire, and inZOI. Each title brings its unique flavor to life simulation, with many fans particularly excited about inZOI, touted for its “deep and detailed”gameplay powered by Unreal Engine 5.
Additionally, genre enthusiasts can anticipate the arrivals of Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma and Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time later in 2025, further enriching the cozy gaming landscape.
2025: A Year Filled with Long-Awaited Franchise Releases
While Project Rene would surely benefit from its brand recognition, it is not alone in the wave of major franchise releases expected in 2025. This year is packed with highly anticipated follow-ups, some of which have been awaited for nearly a decade.
Titles like Fable, which is reviving after a 15-year hiatus, and Civilization 7, set to arrive in February nearly nine years post Civ 6, underline the crowded landscape. Furthermore, Monster Hunter Wilds will make its entrance in the same month, seven years after Monster Hunter: World, while Grand Theft Auto 6 aims for a 2025 release, almost 12 years following GTA 5.
Though Project Rene is distinct in its gameplay, launching amidst such high-profile titles could overshadow its debut. EA is likely to be strategic, selecting a timeframe that allows Project Rene to shine without the distractions of competing blockbusters, especially if it moves towards a free-to-play model.
