The latest episode of The Great British Bake Off Season 15, Episode 6, aired on October 29, 2024, featuring seven enthusiastic amateur bakers aiming to impress the judges with their confectionary masterpieces. As usual, one contestant had to leave the competition for the title of champion baker.
In the previous episode focused on Pastry Week, Andy faced elimination after his toffee podium fell apart right before the judges’ eyes.
This week, the bakers were challenged to create a delectable autumn-themed pie for their signature bake, tackle the technical task of crafting parkin, and design an elaborate autumn festival cake as the showstopper. Sumayah wowed the judges once again, earning her second Star Baker award this season—she previously took home the title after Biscuit Week—while another contestant met their exit during this round.
Noel Fielding welcomed back Alison Hammond, who is participating in The Great British Bake Off for a second consecutive year. Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith returned as judges, providing their insights and evaluating each bake.
Highlights from The Great British Bake Off Season 15 Episode 6
The episode commenced with the bakers preparing a comforting sweet autumn pie. Paul mentioned he was on the lookout for an impeccable blend of seasonal spices and subtle flavors.
Nelly presented her ‘Out in Nature’ pie, which featured a combination of apple and poppy seeds, while last week’s standout, Gill, delighted the judges with her blackberry and apple ‘Windy Day’ pie. Dylan’s Autumnal Apple Pie had delicious filling, but Prue criticized the crust as being “a bit tough,”according to Paul.
Illiyin’s Autumnal Fruit Pie failed to impress due to raw pastry, whereas Christiaan’s Forest Cano-pie received praise for its taste and visual appeal. Unfortunately, both Georgie and Sumayah’s pies were critiqued for being overly spicy, with Georgie’s Pumpkin and Pecan Pie and Sumayah’s Butternut and Pecan Pie.
Next, the Technical Challenge, created by Prue, tasked the bakers with baking a vegan parkin, a traditional cake often enjoyed during bonfire night. The absence of eggs made this challenge particularly tricky, potentially increasing the baking time.
The judges ranked the bakers as follows in this segment of The Great British Bake Off:
- Yearly
- Georgie
- Sumayah
- Dylan
- Nelly
- Christian
- Gill
As the final challenge unfolded, bakers were instructed to create an Autumn Festival Cake, incorporating ingredients like carrots, beetroot, and spinach.
- Christiaan: ‘Roots of Samhain’ Cake
- Nelly: ‘Woman in Autumn’ Cake
- Illiyin: Day of the Dead Cake
- Gill: Bonfire ‘Parrot’ Cake
- Georgie: ‘Tree Trunk Scene’ Cake
- Sumayah: ‘Autumn Leaves’ Harvest Cake
- Dylan: Diwali Cake
Dylan faced a mishap when he dropped his cake and had to re-bake it but ultimately succeeded due to the vibrant flavors of orange and beetroot. Sumayah secured the prestigious Star Baker title for the second time, following an outstanding display in the tent.
Gill, last week’s champion and noted by Paul as a surprising contender, came close to repeating her prior success. However, her solid performance only reaffirmed her position as a strong underdog.
Sadly, Nelly had to say goodbye to The Great British Bake Off tent this week. She expressed that reaching “round three was a bonus”and conveyed her gratitude for the experience. Looking ahead, next week’s theme is Dessert Week, which will include challenges like meringue nests, steamed suet puddings, and the classic Italian dessert tiramisu.
