The Great British Bake Off Season 15 Episode 2 Recap: Biscuit Week Eliminates Two Bakers Amid Health Concerns

This week, The Great British Bake Off season 15 aired its second episode on Monday, October 1, 2024, on Channel 4. The beloved baking competition saw the return of contestant Jeff, who had to leave the previous week due to an unexpected health issue.

The theme of this episode was Biscuit Week. The bakers faced challenges that included creating Viennese sandwich biscuits and crafting biscuit puppet theatres. According to the episode synopsis:

“It is Biscuit Week and the bakers make Viennese sandwiches, a retro, minty favourite, and present puppet theatres as they compete to take centre stage. The tension is not confined to the bakes, as drama unfolds in the tent.”

By the episode’s conclusion, two contestants exited the competition. After a brief return, Jeff opted to leave again, while Hazel was eliminated from the show. Illiyin and Danny also encountered health issues but managed to stay in the competition.

The Great British Bake Off season 15, episode 2, celebrated Biscuit Week. During the Signature Bake challenge, contestants were tasked with creating Viennese Whirls, with judges focusing on texture and unique flavors.

John produced Irish Cream and Coffee Biscuits, while Jeff’s dish was whimsically named “What’s the Matter, Are You Not Feeling Well? Biscuit.”Illiyin crafted Pistachio and White Chocolate Viennese Biscuits, described as “more traditional biscuit than Viennese.” Other bakers included Christiaan with floral Viennese Biscuits and Georgie, who made Rhubarb and Custard Viennese Biscuits.

Nelly presented “My First Dog”biscuits, while Sumayah opted for Cheese and Blackberry Viennese Biscuits. Mike created Malted Brown Butter and Raspberry Viennese Biscuits, and Andy whippedd up Peanut Butter and Jelly Viennese Biscuits. Dylan chose to make Campfire Cookie Viennese Biscuits, while Gill featured a Two Desserts Viennese Biscuit, and Hazel showcased Coffee and Hazelnut Viennese Biscuits.

The next challenge required contestants to create Mint Cream Biscuits, demanding 12 biscuits each. During this task, Jeff expressed his desire to leave the competition, stating he had “enough” and couldn’t “do it.”

“This time around just wasn’t right for me,”said Jeff as he exited the show.

Following Jeff’s self-elimination, Illiyin fainted after the technical challenge but managed to recover enough to attempt the Showstopper. Unfortunately, she was unable to present her creation to the judges; however, Noel Fielding graciously stepped in to assist her.

Dylan also faced challenges during the Showstopper but continued to participate. The Showstopper challenge required bakers to create an edible puppet theatre. The imaginative creations included:

  • Sumayah: Enchanted Garden Biscuit Puppet Theatre

Sumayah’s impressive creation earned her the title of Star Baker, while Hazel was sadly eliminated from the competition. Before her departure from The Great British Bake Off season 15, Hazel remarked that she might not be making puppet theatres in the future.
